Weir Engineering Services, p a r t of the Weir Group, has been awarded a contract to refurbish the cooling water make-up p u m p i n g equipment t h a t serves N a t i o n a l Power's D i d c o t 'A' p o w e r s t a t i o n a n d t h e new CCGT Didcot 'B' station when it comes on-line later this year. The contract valued at over £800,000, is to u p r a t e all the p l a n t to accommodate the additional d e m a n d of the 'B' station and also prolong the equipment life for an additional 25 years. Northumbrian Water has awarded W e i r P u m p s a contract, worth nearly £1.3 million, to supply p u m p i n g equipment to t h e Tees E s t u a r y ( N o r t h Bank transfer) effluent scheme. The North Bank transfer will collect sewage at the flow transfer pumping station, which forms part of Portrack sewage treatment works, where the equipment will be installed. It will transfer flow via a pipeline along the north bank of the River Tees and through a tunnel under the river for full treatment at Bran Sands sewage treatment works, in compliance with EC urban wastewater directives,

Weir will supply three closecoupled high-head sewage p u m p s complete with 950 kW v a r i a b l e s p e e d m o t o r s , each controlled via a 24 pulse variable speed inverter drive and a d e d i c a t e d t r a n s f o r m e r . The Weir scope of supply includes pipework, valves and cabling together with installation and commissioning. David Brown Pumps h a s manufactured two DB36 3800 kW barrel casing p u m p s e t s for Shell E x p l o r a t i o n ' s first FPU (floating production unit) for water injection service in the North Sea. The p u m p s e t s , s u p p l i e d through Stork Protec BV, incorp o r a t e a full cartridge withdrawal 9-stage barrel easing p u m p c o n s t r u c t e d in s u p e r d u p l e x stainless steel. Each pump, tog e t h e r w i t h a David Brown s p e e d i n c r e a s i n g gearbox, a Lawrence Scott m o t o r and an integral stainless steel lubrications system is m o u n t e d on a three point b a s e p l a t e designed to a c c o m m o d a t e t h e FPU's pitch and roll.

Hands-on practice with bearing installation and maintenance tools, gauges, lubrication equipment and pocket-size monitoring devices will highlight the 1996 SKF USA Inc. Bearing M a i n t e n a n c e I n s t i t u t e (BMI) seminar. Now in its 17th year, BMI h a s t r a i n e d t h o u s a n d s of engineers, mechanics, oilers and technicians in the p r o p e r care and handling of bearings. The seminar's objectives are to reduce b e a r i n g - r e l a t e d equipment downtime and to increase productivity by instituting the principles of the SKF TroubleFree Operation TM program and the SKF Shaft-System Management concept. The three-day seminar will be held seven times at SKF headquarters, in King of Prussia, PA; e i g h t r e g i o n a l s e m i n a r s are scheduled throughout the year at various US locations.
