Full colour 10 in x 8 in prints or transparencies can be produced from raster-scan terminals by CalComp's Model 31 colour graphics sy6tem. Developed by Californian medical instrument company Dunn Instruments and.the Polaroid Corporation, the hard copy unit will be sold outside the USA by CalComp, recently merged by Sanders, for about £7500. Lateral red-green-blue phosphors of the display screen are changed electronically into vertical colour transmissions. This is made possible by a microprocessor-controlled filter wheel. As the wheel revolves, each phosphor is filtered individually and transmitted. The complete colour image on film is a composite of three separate exposures. Launched onto the US market last summer, the system is used in NASA's Pioneer Saturn Programme transforming incoming imaging data from the spacecraft direct to photographic prints. CalComp predict a 22 fold increase in the market for colour graphics by 1983, 80 000-85 000 new terminals a year mainly for management information, graphic design and image processing. Colour IMAGE IMAGE (interactive multi-activity graphics environment) is a product line from Applicon built around a new operating system based on DEC's RSX-11M. Peripherals include a family of Versatec raster-scan plotters and a choice of storage tube or colour video displays. IMAGE systems are configured with a dual-processor architecture combining a DEC PDP11 with Applicon's Graphics 32. System response times are claimed to be five times faster than previous Applicon systems. Current Applicon users can always have their systems upgraded to an IMAGE configuration. The 19 in colour raster display is part of a graphics workstation including an alphanumeric keyboard, and a choice of tablets with electronic pens. There are seven colours and the display can erase selected components
