Hardmetal drill takes top prize The 14th annual EPMA Awards took place at last month’s Euro PM2006 Congress and Exhibition in Ghent, showcasing PM’s innovation and excellence. Once again they were sponsored by Metal Powder Report. For the past 13 years the annual awards have promoted “innovation” within the PM industry. A change of format after the Euro PM2005 event, has seen the 2006 EPMA

Korean showcase for ‘06 World Congress Attended by almost 1,000 delegates and guests from 40 countries, the 2006 Powder Metallurgy World Congress in Busan, Korea, focused attention on the growing PM market in Asia. Production of iron and copper-base PM parts increased to 303 000 short tons in 2005, a 7.7 per cent increase over the previous year. The Korean PM industry, the third largest in Asia, is enjoying robust growth. In 2005 the

industry produced more than 50 000 tons of PM parts, an 18.7 per cent increase over 2004. Korea has 38 PM parts makers and five producers of metal powders. The World Congress, hosted by the Korean Powder Metallurgy Institute, featured 392 oral presentations, 355 poster reviews, and a trade show with 106 exhibitors from 15 countries. Canadian powder maker QMP is to close its European manufacturing plant in Monchengladbach, Germany. QMP purchased the plant from Mannesmann Demag in 1998. The plant provided QMP with a powder annealing and blending capacity of approximately 35,000 short tons. While the closure will be completed by the end of 2007, QMP will maintain a technical/sales office in Europe beyond that time.
European customers will be supplied from the company’s main plant in Canada. “This closure represents a major step for QMP, and it is a decision that has not been taken lightly,” says Martin Thibodeau, president. “However, we feel that consolidating powder production in one facility, in Canada, will enable QMP to become a stronger and more competitive producer of ferrous powders.”
lines. The new additions to the database have increased the total number of searchable lines of data to over 2500. A non-ferrous area containing specific data on structural material is planned to be added to the existing data-
base, which will enable users to compare data between the two main powder categories. The new data lines are planned to go on-line towards the end of 2006. Since the GPMPD launch in 2004, more than 3500 users
from 71 countries have registered. The GPMPD database is a free to access service on the Internet (www.pmdatabase. com) and is available 24/7, which allows registered users everywhere to obtain information as and when they need it.
