Headache disorders are among the most commonly encountered disorders seen in the primary care office. The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 47% of the adult population has experienced a headache at least once within a year’s time with over 10% of these patients reporting migraine headaches. Headaches lasting 15 or more days monthly affect up to 4% of the world’s adult population. Migraine headaches have been found to account for 1.3% of total years lost due to disability according to a 2004 report from the Global Burden of Disease Study. Dr. Irene Semenov and her colleagues from the Department of Neurology at NorthShore University HealthSystem (Evanston, IL) present a comprehensive overview of this common, but vexing clinical disorder.
