STETHOSCOPE.

D a s . ]. KILPATRICK REID and W . Owen-Morris have introduced a new form of B i n a u r a l Stethoscope, the general form of which is indicated in the a n n e x e d figure. ~ T h e inventors, being of the opinion that existing types of stethoscope are lacking as effective clinical i n s t r u m e n t s and oftentimes too c u m b e r s o m e and expensive, have introduced a form which they consider combines t h e handiness of a pocket phonendoscope with the a d v a n t a g e s , as r e g a r d s clearness of t r a n s m i s s i o n of sounds, of the old-fashioned single stick wooden stethoscope. T h e new i n s t r u m e n t possesses s e p a r a t e ear-pieces, w h i c h are m a d e to twist into the ears of the exarnining doctor. T h e chest-piece is of l i g h t composition, durable, and causes no pull on the ears as do some h e a y y phonendoscopes. T h e lumen of the transm i t t i n g tube is constant throughout, and by tapering at the joints between the tube and the chest- and ear-pieces all dead space for " b a c k w a s h " is eliminated. T h e chest-piece is protected b y a r u b b e r cap to ensure comfort for the patient, and is believed to m a k e for clearness in transmission. T h e essential features of the inTHE KILPATRICK REID AND s t r u m e n t are its exceptional good powers of OWEN-MORRIS BINAURAL conduction and its c o m p a c t n e s s and conSTETHOSCOPE. venience for carrying in the pocket.
