Freudenberg-NOK expands PTFE seal product range PolyOne’s Asian business continues to grow by acquiring High Quality Plastics In the US, Freudenberg-NOK of Plymouth, Michigan has acquired High Quality Plastics Inc (HQP), a designer and producer of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) seals that are used in automotive transmissions and industrial products, from Koehler Brothers Inc of Findlay, Ohio, USA. Stephen Philippart, Freudenberg-NOK’s Vice President of Automotive Sales and Marketing, says that this strategic acquisition, which builds on its existing capabilities, solidifies the company’s strong position as a major supplier of automotive PTFE seals. It also enhances the company’s ability to provide total sealing packages, which can help to
reduce warranty costs, for automotive transmission applications. The terms of the sale, which was completed in early October 2002, were not disclosed. Founded in 1978, HQP produces more than a quarter of a billion parts annually, and employs approximately 130 people at its facility in Findlay. The company designs and produces thermoplastic rotating ring seals, precision plastic components and sub-assemblies. Its sales in 2001 totalled US$13.1 million. US-based PolyOne Corp has embarked on an expansion of its rapidly growing Asian business. The company has already initiated improvements at its existing manufacturing facilities, and has added a customer support lab in southern China. It is seeing brisk customer demand in the region, which is enjoying an economic boom. For 2002, it projects growth of over 30% in its Asian business, worth some US$50 million in 2001. The polymer services company entered Asia in 1997, with facilities in Shanghai. It has added compounding facilities for engineering polymers in Singapore and in Suzhou, near Shanghai. Henkel strengthens adhesives businesses in Spain and the US Germany’s Henkel Group has made two acquisitions which strengthen its adhesives businesses in Spain and the US. The group, which is based in Düsseldorf, has taken over Solyplast SA of Barcelona, Spain, a manufacturer of adhesives and sealants. By purchasing Solyplast, Henkel says that it is not only strengthening its market position but also acquiring expertise that ideally complements its existing business. Furthermore, this acquisition gives it an opportunity to grow in this area, and in other regions. Founded in 1973, Solyplast is one of Spain’s leading sealants companies. It has 42 employees, and had sales of some 14.6 million in 2001. The German group has also acquired the North American subsidiary of Japan’s Cemedine Co Ltd. Based in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, Cemedine USA Inc serves the automotive industry. According to Ramon Bacardit, Corporate Vice President of Henkel Surface Technologies, this acquisition we will help the company to expand
its adhesives and sealants portfolio to specifically serve Japanese car manufacturers that are operating in the North American markets. Cemedine USA generated sales of over US$33 million in fiscal 2001, and employs 86 people. Since late 1999, the two companies have been developing, manufacturing and marketing adhesives and sealants for the automotive industry in their joint-venture company Cemedine Henkel Co Ltd, which is based in Tokyo, Japan. In the first half of fiscal 2002, the Henkel Group generated sales of 4.9 billion, and an operating profit of 330 million. It employs 46 818 people worldwide.
