F O C U S coatings, allowing for a single coat process. The UV lamp is attached directly to the spray nozzle to cure the splats immediately upon reaching the substrate. NASA used the PTS technology to apply and cure UV powder coatings. The system, designated PTS6000uv, is ideal for field application since it is portable (requires electricity and compressed air) and comes in either 5kW, or 15kW sizes. Resodyn Corporation can formulate UV powders for specific applications for use with the system. High performance polyester for powder coatings Cytec Industries Inc launched a new range of polyesters under the name Crylcoat Primavera. The products help to reduce formulation costs for powder coatings without compromising on reliability in material supply and quality. The first product of the range, Crylcoat E04048 is a 60:40 hybrid polyester for metal applications for indoor use. Powder coatings based on this product harden at 190°C for 10 min and provide the same performance as conventional hybrid formulations. Cytec reports favourable properties of the new products in view of appearance and resistance to solvents and boiling water. Titanium dioxide topples Results for 2Q 2009 indicate that the period was among the worst in the titanium dioxide industry’s history, despite intermittent signs of improving demand. Huntsman’s titanium dioxide operation posted an operating loss of $26 M in the quarter against a gain of $8 M in 2Q 2008. The firm’s pigments revenue fell by 21% to $254 M, largely attributed to reduced sales and a drop in average selling prices. DuPont’s Coatings and Color Technologies division registered a 47% decline in pretax operating income to $133 M. Sales dipped 26% to $1400 M, reflecting mainly the sustained decline in the automotive

Encouraging growth potential for the Indian paint industry The Indian paint market is continuing to expand, though at a slower rate because of the global economic downturn. The country’s paint market is approximately 940 M litres, worth about $2 bn, of which the organized sector makes up 54% of the total volume and 65% of the value. The industry has grown at a compounded growth rate of 1213%/y in the last 10 years and is estimated to expand by 11-12%/y in the next five years. Decorative paints constitute 75% of the Indian paint market, with industrial paints accounting for the remaining 25%. The leading companies in the sector are Asian Paints with over 40% market share, Kansai Nerolac (20%), Berger Paints (19%) and AkzoNobel (12%). Asian Paints has ramped up powder coatings capacity at its unit in Himachal Pradesh and industrial coatings capacity in Maharashtra. Kansai Nerolac is building a green field plant at Hosur in Tamil Nadu and is expanding its facilities in Lote Parshuram and Bawal. Pie charts 1 and 2 depict the composition of the decorative and industrial sector. Coatings World, Aug 2009, 14 (8), 19-21

Overview of advances in pipeline coating New pipeline coating materials are currently undergoing comprehensive trials with the view of improving the long-term durability of pipelines used in energy and water applications. Pipelines are being constructed around the globe to address growing demands for water and energy, and pipeline integrity studies are being initiated to minimize loss in transmission and to survive increasingly hostile 7
