Since layer 1 is flexible, layer 2 is normally used as a support. It is usually manufactured from aluminium, because it is easy to work, can be anodized and is relatively light, this layer can be machined with extra holes and slots. These allow visual access to data or access to the internal circuitry for 'flying t~i1.' ff layer 1 is a switching layer. Enco will design the plastic laminate, including colour layout and the ergonomic positioning of panel components. As well as supplying m e m b r a n e switches, Enco can also supply spe~ali-~:i optoelectronic assemblies including LCDs and their drivers.

Air tr mc simulators ordered The Australian Department of Aviation (DoA) has a w a r d e d Ferranti a £4.4M contract for the supply of two air traffic service simulators. The simulators, one to be installed at the DoA Central Training College and the other at Melbourne Airport, will provide comprehensive training for Australian air t r a ~ c service officers. The Melbourne simulator will use the same type of displays as .those cun:ently in service with the DoA, whereas the Central Training College simulator will use high-resolution raster displays, driven by Ferranti VARS display generators. High-performance CRT Applications that require projection CRTs, with performance better than is available in top-end consumer products, should benefit from a family of highperformance projection CRTs from Thomson-CSF. Typical uses of the tubes will be in simulators, military headquarters and planetaria displays. Typical of this family is the TH 8441 P53, featuring an electromagnetic focusing and deflection tetrode gun that enables peak luminances of several tens of thousands of c d / m z and linewidths of less than 100 ~m to be attained. Its 120 mm useful diameter screen is made of a fiat, non-browning optical glass capable of withstanding the gun's 36 kV maximum beam e n e r g y with excellent lifetime characteristics. Available in r e d (P56), g r e e n (1~3) and blue (PM) fine-grain, burn-resistant phosphors, the TH 8441 is well suited to both high brightness raster scanned TV

picture projection and highresolution, random scan, threecolour projection. Typical performance in the TV projection m o d e includes a frame luminance of over 30000 cdlm s with 1 700 points/line for the g r e e n (eye-dominant) phosphor. This level corresponds to operation in equipment of the so-called 500 lumens, peak type. In a random scan, high-resolution mode, the TH 8441 P53 delivers up to 65 000 cd/m 2 with a 100 t~u linewidth, or 17 500 c d / m z with a 65 IJ-m linewidth (green phosphor, linewidth m e a s u r e d between half brighthess points). White (P45), yellow (El06) and other g r e e n phosphors are also available for special applications. For higher brightness, 5 in, 6 in or 7 in tubes can be fired with guns enabling operation up to 50 kV. Thonzson-CST Components and
