r' =plags neuJs International c o n f e r e n c e will w o r k with display units Display units are becoming increasingly important to an increasing number of people. They are to be found, not only at work, but also at home and in other common situations. Despite, or maybe because of this, there are still many problems associated with such systems. Problems that can be solved with discussion and a scientific approach. The international scientific conference 'Work with Display Units' to be held in Stockholm, May 12-15 1986, will cover many of these problems. Six displays areas will be investigated - - occupational health technical hygiene, image quality and vision, ergonomics, work organization and human-computer interaction. These topic titles are not meant to be exhaustive, just outlines of the areas of study for the conference. Members of the scientific organizing committee and regional advisors have been appointed to evolve their subject areas for the benefit of the conference and the delegates, and to m a k e the conference truly international. Regional coordinators appointed so far include Etienne Grandjean, the Honorary coordinator from Switzerland, Professor N.S. Kirk from the UK, Dr D. Berthette from Canada, Professor M. Smith and Professor J. Stellman, from the USA, Professor A.C. Wisner, France, Dr Noro, Japan, and Professor H. Schmidtke, FRG. Three conference bulletins are to be published. The first, which was published in May 1984, gave a brief outline of the conference, acted as a first call for papers and contained outlines of the various topics written by the committee members associated with those topics. The second, to be published in February 1985 will contain an

improved selection of topics, following from the advice given by the regional advisors. It will also act as a second call for papers. The third and last bulletin, scheduled for December 1985, will contain the final programme and abstracts. The members of the organizing committee responsible for the six topics are: Ore Franz6n (Image quality and vision), Kjell Hansson (Technical hygiene), Asa Kilbom (Ergonomics), Begnt Knave (Occupational health), Yvonne Waern (Human-computer interaction), and Gunnela Westlander (Work organization). Professor Knave is also the conference president. Abstracts of 300-500 words,

preferably with one illustration should be received before the end of June 1985, and the papers accepted for the conference should be received before the end of January 1986. The official language of the conference will be English. Combined with the conference there will be an exhibition whose aim is to present ideas, systems, methods and equipment for good work systems. Like the conference, it will be held at Stookholmsmassan -- Stock.holm International Fairs.

Dot matrix a!aplays go underground London Transport has placed a further order with Thorn EMI Electronics for the supply of dot matrix displays for use in Northern Line underground stations. As well as the conventional indoor display, this latest contract includes a weatherresistant outdoor display, incorporating high intensity LEDs that enable the system to be used in surface stations during daylight. The contract is worth in excess of £1.25 m and covers the supply of 48 indoor and 31 outdoor displays, the majority of which will be double-sided, together with 50 display controllers. Each display face will contain 6144 individually-controlled LEDs arranged in a 256 x 24 matrix. This allows two lines of up to 32 characters to be displayed individually in a 25 x 20 cm format, which provides a higher resolution display than the more common 17.5 x 12.5 cm for-

mat. This latest order also calls for a graphics software package which will enable travel announcements to be interspersed with animated graphics.
