Safelab Systems L t d have introduced the T O M - V A P TM and POWERVAP TM rotary evaporators, which have Teflon/ground glass rotating seals to provide cost- and energy-efficient continuous solvent recovery, for many years. TOM-VAprM's rotary seal is guaranteed for 5 years and when upgraded to POWERVAP TM, its computer will run it 24 hours a day, automatically refilling its rotating flasks and emptying its distillate flasks. T h e floating-flask system ensures that a 20litre POWERVAP TM can recover 1000 litres of solvent in 24 hours. Highpurity solvent recovery is possible due to the all glass and P T F E construction. Applications range from H P L C and P R E P LC to histopathology.
Transfected cell selection Miltenyi Biotech have introduced the new MACSelcct system for fast and easy magnetic isolation of stably and transiently transfected cells. A pMACS plasmid encoding a cell surface marker is cotransfected with the plasmid of interest by any standard transfection method. After a short incubation time transfected cells can be enriched to high purity using the colloidal MACSelect MicroBeads. Transfectants can be isolated and analyzed from formerly untransfectable cells, such as most primary cell lines. T h e P C R - S S P technique for H L A typing is based on the principle that a perfectly matched primer will be more efficiently used in the PCR reaction than a primer with several mismatches. T h e discrimination between alleles is part of the amplification step and post-PCR handling time is reduced to 30 minutes. T h e total time required from sample to result is less than 2 hours and 30 minutes, all with the same PCR profile. Table top centrifuge
Biofuge stratos, the new refrigerated, high speed, table-top centrifuge from Heraeus, incorporates functions normally only available on floor-standing units. A new drive spindle enables the Biofuge stratos to accelerate to a maximum RCF of 45,000 x g in 25 seconds. The spindle accepts an extensive range of rotors, including fixed angle, microlitre and swing-out plus a special rotor for microtitre plates, covering a wide range of temperature critical separation tasks. An imbalance system immediately detects any inbaiance caused during a run, e.g. due to tube breakage. Circle numer 10 on a reader response card. New fluorescence attachment
A new rotating stage with ceramic coating has been introduced for the Carl Zciss Axiolab routine laboratory microscope. This increases the flexibility of the range, particularly where specimens need to be rotated for photomicrography or video microscopy applications. Rotation is through 210 ° and the stage can be locked in situ at any angle. T o allow precise final positioning, there are~coaxial controls for the XY movement of the specimen and vernier scales for basic location. For improved longevity, the surface of the stage has been hardanodised and then ceramic-coated. This reduces scratching of the anodised surface and, as it reduces resistance when the slide is placed into position in the specimen holder, it also improves ease of use and user comfort.
