echocardiography (M and B mode, and Doppler). ABPM using a Spacelabs 9000, and plasma levels of P-III-P. The model ANOVA~ one way, was used for the statistical analysis. The level of sigmficance was accepted for p<0.01 (two-tailed probabilities). The 35 hypertensives studied were divided in two subgroups: dippers (21 subjects) and non-dippers (14 subjects). The non-dipper group had an higher degree of left ventdcular hypertrophy obtained by the higher measurement of the inter-ventrieular septum thickness (p<0.01), posterior wall thickness (p<0.01), and an higher index of left ventricular mass (p<0.0l) then the dippors. Non-dippers also had higher plasma levels of P-III-P then dippers (p<0.0l). It wasn't found any correlation between the several echecardiagraphy parameters and P-III-P levels (p-ns). In conclusion, P-III-P might b¢ a marker of tissue lesion, as it has
PRESENCE OF CHLAMYDIA PNEUMONIAE IN CULTURED HUMAN SMOOTH MUSCLE CELLS FROM ARTERIES WITH AND WITHOUT ATHEROSCLEROTIC LESIONS I.K~ Korakianitou, M. Sudmann, M. Lennarz, V. Lewen, C. B6hm, D. Schnabel and K.O. Stumbe. Medical University Policlinic Bonn, Germany Seroepidemiological studies have associated Chlamydia pneumonias (C. pneu.) with atherosclerosis, and the organism has been demonstrated in atheromatous plaques of coronary and carotid arteries, but not in healthy arteries and in arteries not expected to develop atherosclerosis. We studied human vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) in culture for the presence of C. pneu. VSMC were isolated from 14 aortic (with atherosclerosis) and 12 internal mammary artery lIMA) specimen (without atherosclerosis) of subjects (mean age: 58y) undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery as well as from appendicular artery (APA) segments (n=9) of children (mean age: 10y) obtained during appendectomy. Cells from passages 3-5 were examined by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and a specific DNA enzyme immuno-assay (DEIA) using a single-stranded DNA probe to detect specific ONA sequences for the presence of C. pneu. 9 of the 14 aortic, 7 of the 12 IMA and 1 of the 9 APA cell lines were positive for C. pneu. by PCR, but only 5 aortic, 4 IMA and 1 APA cell lines were positive for both PCR and DEIA indicating lower sensitivity of the PCR test. C. pneu. can be found in a significant proportion of cultured VSMCs obtained from human arteries with and without atherosclerofic lesions. The demonstration of C. pneu. in cell lines from arteries commonly not developing atherosclerosis, does not add evidence to a primary role of the organism in the causation of the atfierosclerotic disease process.

H004 ESSENTIAL HYPERTENSION, UNSTABLE ANGINA AND THE IMMUNE LINK IN HOMEOSTASIS. V.K.Tashchuk, I,V.Melnitsky, G.V. Dubrovska, O.S. Polyanska, 1.1. Ilashchuk. Bukovinian Medical Academy and Cardiocenter, Chernivtsi, Ukraine. With regard to the immune link contribution to pathogenesis of the destabilization, of an ischemic heart desease analyses have been done of the combinative course influence of unstable angina (UA) and essential hypertension (UAEH) upon printipal parameters of the immune reactivity in 56 patients with UAEH and 69 with UA. In the 1st group of patients with UAEH was marked a quantitative growth of the circulating immune complexes (CIC) as compared to UA cases (103,2+10,3 and 76,5+6,8 optical density units/100 ml, p<0,05). The absence of the administration of antihypertensives has led to the prevalence in the CIC levels compared to the treated patients (98,7+9,1 and 81,0+6,2 optical density units/100 ml, p<0,01). At the same time no significant distinctions were revealed between UAEH and UA as to the immunoglobuline levels: IgG (13,5+1,8 and 14,5+_1,5 g/I, p>0,5), IgA (2,5+_0,3 and 3,0+_0,5 g/I, p>0,5), IgM (1,3+0,2 and 1,6+_0,3 g/I, p>0,2), together with a considerable decrease of IgE (36,7+12,9 and 107,3+32,3 optical density units/I, p0,5) as well as of T- lymphocytes ranges (33,5+2,7 and 29,4+2,9%, p>g,5) have taken place. Thus there exist a certain number of discrepancies in the immune status of those suffering from the unstable angina being accompanied by the essential hypertension, which can be related as inflammation, taking into account a quantitative grouth essential hypertension, unstable angina, inflammation
