Walking beam furnace caters f o r customer needs Its new walking b e a m furnace h a s been designed so t h a t t h e varying n e e d s of customers can be met, claims Lenton Thermal Designs of Market Harborough, UI~ The WBF-Series walking b e a m furnace is designed along m o d u l a r l i n e s s u c h t h a t its o p e r a t i o n a l t e m p e r a t u r e , lateral d i m e n s i o n s a n d length of traverse may be tailored to t h e r e q u i r e m e n t s of individual customers. In s t a n d a r d form t h e c h a m b e r d i m e n s i o n s are 500 x 500 mm, length 2.2 m. Three zone h e a t i n g is p r o v i d e d by spiral w o u n d e l e m e n t s supported by ceramic t u b e s positioned below t h e b e a m s a n d in t h e c h a m b e r ceiling. These provide operational t e m p e r a t u r e s u p to

1150°C. There are five parallel b e a m s in t h e base of t h e c h a m b e r , t h r e e of w h i c h effect s t a t i c support. The two walking b e a m s are provided with variable speed control enabling t h r o u g h p u t times from a minim u m of one h o u r to be selected. Each e n d of t h e c h a m b e r is fitted with a m e s h s u r r o u n d for user protection, a n d access is provided via electrically lifted doors.

PACVD services for hard refractory coatings Spire Corp of Bedford, Massachusetts, USA, h a s i n t r o d u c e d p l a s m a a s s i s t e d chemical vap o u r deposition (PACVD) services for h a r d coatings of silicon c a r b i d e , silicon n i t r i d e , a n d silicon-alloyed diamond-like carbon. It says t h a t principal coating applications are to i m p a r t wear, erosion, o x i d a t i o n a n d corrosion resistance to metals, composites and ceramics. The coatings can be deposited onto irregularly shaped particles using Spire's 3-D PACVD deposition chamber, which was jointly developed with Air Products a n d Chemicals, who h a s filed for a p a t e n t on t h e development. The chamber, Spire claims, provides uniform coatings on complex p a r t s such as bearings a n d t u r b i n e blades. Deposition t e m p e r a t u r e s a r e less t h a n 500°C so m a n y materials which c a n n o t be coated by conventional chemical v a p o u r deposition (CVD) can be treated. Coatings
