Controller/comms cards plug into AMD Mvklikus beard Two programmable extension modules and a Multibus-compatible motherboard have been introduced by US firm Advanced Micro Devices. The Am94/1541 stepper motor controller is a single-width module using an onboard 8-bit microcontroller integrated circuit. The Am94/1530 is a dual-channel serial communications module. The six connectors on the Am94/ 2000 motherboard support single- and double-width modules that do not need direct memory access. The motherboard does onboard Multibus address decoding and data buffering. It also has two Am8259A programmable interrupt controllers. The stepper motor controller drives one four-phase stepper motor. To do this it can use a program stored in the microcontroller, or commands sent from the CPU board. A line to an external clock allows several Am94/ 1541s to be synchronized. The module also has buffered lines for external feedback from the devices it controls. The communications module increases the I/O of a Multibuscompatible system by adding two RS232 serial channels to the host board. Another Multibus-compatible board has been announced by Advanced Micro Devices. The Am96/5232 provides sockets for up to 256 kbytes of EPROM, 128 kbytes of static RAM or 32 kbytes of E2PROM.

For I/O the board includes an RS232C synchronous/asynchronous serial port, a parallel interface with 24 lines, counter/timers, and a programmable interrupt controller. The board provides 20-bit and 24-bit addressing, 8-bit and 16-bit memory data, and 8-bit and 16-bit I/O addresses. It has a 16 Mbyte addressing range. The Am9513 system timing controller that comes on the board contains five programmable timers. Bus-

UK industrial controller is Apple-compatible

Two 64k static RAMs released by Hitachi have access times of 55 ns and 70 ns. All I/O on the HM6287 is directly TTL compatible. The chip is organised as 64k x 1. Typical power consumption is 300 mW in active mode and 100 mW in standby. Packaging is in a 22-pin 0.3 in (7.6 ram) plastic or ceramic housing. (Hitachi

vectored interrupts are programmably controlled by the Am8259A unit. The Am96/5232 also boasts programmable array logic devices for custom configuration of the memory section. The power needed to run the Am96/5232 is 5 V at I A, 12 V at 25 mA and -12 V at 25 mA. The price per board in quantities of I - 9 is £670.

5 MHz A/D converter 'does 18M sample/s' A monolithic video A/D converter has been released by US giant TRW. The TDC1027 does 18M samples per second, says TRW. It converts an analogue signal with frequency components up to 5 MHz into 7-bit words. The converter consists of three functional sections • • •

a comparator array encoding logic output latches

The conversion operation is controlled by a single signal. A sample-and-hold circuit is not used. The unit can be connected to give either true or inverted outputs in binary or offset twos-complement coding. The two function pins that control this are for steady-state (DC)

Two supply voltages power the TDC1027, +5 V and -5.2 V. ]he converter uses strobed latching comparators. These cause the input impedance to vary with the signal level, as comparator input transistors are cut off or become active. The TDC1027 needs a convert signal (CONV). A sample is taken about 10 ns after a rising edge on the CONV pin, says TRW. This delay time varies by a few nanoseconds from part to part and as a function of temperature.
