Arburg expands manufacturing facilities at Lossburg INJECTION moulding specialist Arburg GmbH has significantly expanded its manufacturing facilities with the opening of a new factory, ARBURG II, at its parent plant in Lossburg, Germany. The company invested DM130 million (c. 4Z66 million) in the new building project, representing its single largest investment to date. Of this total DM30 million alone went into new production equipment. With the additional facility, the area devoted to production has been increased from 36 000 to 125 000 square metres. Space has also been created for potential further extension phases. The new area is devoted to the assembly of the company’s range of injection moulding machines; at this stage in their production all machines are basically the same regardless of whether their final end-use will be for the injection moulding of plastics or powder-based feedstocks. The former assembly area is now used for other operations within the manufacturing process. 150 jobs have also been created as a result of the

expansion, taking the eompany tally to 1800 staff worldwide, 1500 of whom work at Lossburg. According to Michael Grandt, Arburg’s sales and control director, the company expects significant growth in turnover in 2000. For the eight months to August 2000, turnover rose 25% compared to the same period in 1999, to DM376.5 million. The forecast for the whole year was put at DM680 million, or a 20% increase on the previous year, when turnover fell by 2.4%. On the technical side, future focal points will lie in the development of the ‘Multilift’ handling system, the production of larger moulding machines with clamp forces up to 4000 kN, and the adoption of modular drive concepts. The company is working towards the introduction of a hybrid machine with modular hydraulic and electromechanical drive axes and a clamp force of 800 kN by late 2001, according to technical director Herbert Kraibiihler.
