F O C US launched Tegomer P-141, a dispersant intended for use in the manufacture of pigment masterbatches, especially those used in colouring polypropylene micro fibres and technical polymers. The new additive facilitates high colour yield, while effectively suppressing the formation of agglomerates. Chemical Engineering (New York), Aug 2004, 111 (8), 28I2,2814

Holland Colours’ pigment pastes for acrylic & silicone sealants
SPC, Soap Perfumery and Cosmetics, Aug 2004, 77 (8), 49
Holland Colours has developed the Holcolex A range of waterborne pigment pastes for colouring acrylic sealants. They have high pigment loadings, but with good dispersion and rheological control. Holland Colours has also launched Holcosil-NS, which is used for colouring unplasticised silicone sealants. This pigment paste series is based on hydroxyl-silicone, so that the system is non-staining. Good viscosity facilitates automatic dosing. Holcosil-NS is available in standard colours and in natural stone effects.

Holliday’s ultramarine pigments for aqueous flexographic inks Last August, Holliday Pigments launched Artizan AF-S and AF-R ultramarine pigments, specially designed for colouring aqueous flexographic inks. Both products have been shown to work well on brown kraft paper substrates and out of a total potential customer base of 175 companies, nearly 90% have now tested samples of the Artizan AF pigments. Merck’s cosmetic pigments with borosilicate substrate Merck’s new cosmetic pigments in the Ronastar and Xirona ranges contain aluminum and calcium borosilicate as the synthetic substrate. This substrate has absolutely no parasite colours and it imparts high transparency and a smooth and even surface of uniform

Yokohama TLO, a joint venture between Toda Kogyo Corp and the Graduate School of Engineering at Yokohama National University, developed a new black pigment based on perylene, employing a process patented by Prof Mizoguchi (who is on the staff of the university). No benzopyrene (a possible carcinogen) is used in the process. BASF was recently granted a worldwide licence to use the Mizoguchi process and BASF is optimistic about the prospects of perylene black being used as a substitute for carbon black in certain toners and coatings. Its electrical insulation properties will enable it to be used in black matrix materials for liquid crystal displays (LCDs), where carbon black cannot be used because of its electrical conductivity. Micronised iron oxides from Nubiola New shared of micronised iron oxides, with very good dispersibility characteristics, have been developed by Nubiola Pigmentos (of Barcelona). Target applications include colouring fibres and formulating high tinting strength masterbatches. Chemical Fibers International, Sep 2004, 54 (4), 238
Omya’s calcium carbonate for foodcontact polyolefins & breathable plastic film Omya GmbH has developed Omyalene calcium carbonate pigment concentrate in a polyolefin carrier, suitable for non-pressure polyolefin
pipes and thermoforming sheets. Omyalene has been granted approvals for food-contact applications by both the German and US authorities. Omyafilm 753O-M is a calcium carbonate pigment which has been specially developed for the breathable film market. Film downgauging can be achieved, without sacrificing the advantages of high water-vapour transmission rate and good moisturepressure resistance. Modern Plastics International, Sep 2004, 34 (9), 146
Pigmat’s magnesium titanate pigments Pigmat (of Chelyabinsk, Russia) is supplying magnesium titanate pigments on a commercial scale, probably for the first time anywhere in the world. Magnesium titanate offers excellent whiteness and light-stability, as well as thermal stability up to 900°C. It is non-toxic and retains its optical characteristics even after exposure to strong sunlight or ultraviolet radiation. No indication is given on prices for Pigmat’s new pigments. Khimiya i Rynok, Dec 2003, 30 (5-6), 41 (in Russian)
Pigment dispersions from Plasticolors Plasticolors Inc has launched the AldeSol range of universal, solventbased pigment dispersions comprising 18 single-pigment masstones. The range consists of finely milled pigments in a mixture of acetate, proprietary additives and aldehyde resin. The AldeSol dispersions offer good shelf-life stability and optimum pigment solids, facilitating handling. Paint & Coatings Industry (PCI), Mar 2004, 20 (3), 78
Shepherd’s Arctic & StarLight pigments The Arctic range of infrared-reflecting pigments from Shepherd Color enables PVC window-profile manufacturers to follow market trends for dark green, brown or black window-frames, without risking problems of heat distortion and warpage. Shepherd also offers StarLight special-effect pigments, removing flow-lines, but avoiding the risk of colours greying-out. Modern Plastics International, Sep 2004, 34 (9), 146
