Paper mill awards industry's largest m e c h a n i c a l seal order AES Engineering Ltd, w h o design, and manufacture, the SEALTEC and .M~SSEAL range of mechanical seals, has been awarded the single largest mechanical seal order for a UK p a p e r mill. Aylesford Newsprint Ltd, a joint venture b e t w e e n SCA Graphic Paper and Mondi Europe, was formed to develop the 100% recycled newsprint business at Aylesford. The c o m p a n y is constructing one of the largest newsprint machines in the world w h i c h wiU increase mill capacity from 90 000 tpa to 370 000 tpa. Aylesford Newsprint Ltd, UK, placed an order for an initial 210 centrifugal p u m p s to be used on b o t h process and condensate duties with ABS Scanpump UK and subsequently an order with Seepex UK for the progressive cavity p u m p s to b e used in the site effluent plant. Mechanical seals ranging in size from 38 m m to 100 m m will be used in all five bearing frame sizes of the ABS Scanpumps and sizes from 70 m m to 140 m m in the Seepex pumps. Holography system d e s i g n e d for seal quality c o n t r o l The DH-7000 Digital Holography System has b e e n introduced by Laser Technology for the non-destructive testing of bonds in metallic and composite structures. The system has b e e n designed primarily for the quality control of abradable seals in jet engine manufacture, although in addition, the DH-7000 can also find subsurface flaws in various types of bonded, brazed or coated materials. The DH-7000 differs from other industrial holographic systems in that it is electronic and not filmbased. So, the fuU-field, non-contac~L examination of c o m p o n e n t s can be assessed in real time. The system comprises t w o mah~ components: an inspection station and a control console. The inspection station incorporates a vibration isolation table, an electronic holography camera with built-in laser and associated optics, and finally a means of inducing stress into the test part via heat or vibration depending upon the application. The control console contains a colour video monitor, image processor and video image printer. The entire system can be set for manual or automatic operation. Plans for STLE 50th meeting announced The Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers will be holding its' 50th annual meelting in Chicago, USA, from 14 to 19 May this year. The meeting will comprise two seals education courses, Basic Seals and Advanced Seals, a n u m b e r of technical sessions and an exhibition. Both education courses will be chaired by Patrick Flach of EG&G Sealol and the vice-chairman will be William Key of BW/IP International. The courses will address end face mechanical seals used in process p u m p s including seal arrangements used to contain emissions. Technical papers will be p r e s e n t e d on subjects including rotary shaft sealing applications, emission regulations, n e w c o n c e p t s for safe~e b a c k up seals, dry running seal technology and gas seals.
