Since 1988, home furnishings merchandising has emerged as a new field of study for students interested in retailing and other business applications related to residential interior design. This major is unique from traditional interior design programs in its strong emphasis on business and interpersonal skills in addition to design skills necessary for success. Home furnishings merchandising graduates have many career opportunities and are able to obtain relevant positions after they graduate with bachelor's degrees. This field offers varied career options for graduates with numerous job titles in wholesaling, retailing, real estate, or related areas. Retailing can be in department stores, furniture stores, home improvement stores, specialty stores, mass merchants, malls, and direct marketing. Wholesaling can be in market centers in sales, management, or marketing. Real estate can be in the area of model homes interior design and sales, in historic preservation, or in remodeling and refurbishing existing homes. Merchandising can be defined as "that part of marketing which covers the selection, packaging, pricing, promotion, and display of goods, as well as the planning of quantities to be purchased and the timing of their delivery. "1 Home furnishings merchandising as a field of study depends on literature in furniture design and production, home accessories, textiles, space planning, history of furniture, principles of design and lighting, consumer behavior, merchandising, marketing, finance, and management.

An understanding of human development and how space and furniture needs change over the life cycle is an important part of this field. Furniture purchases are often life-time purchases, so furniture needs to be adaptable to meet changinghuman needs. For example, families with young children need to select different upholstery fabric than empty nest families. In addition, students need to understand how to work with all types of consumers who have unique values, budgets, and goals for their homes. Librarians who are developing a serials collection to support home furnishings merchandising undergraduate programs need to be aware of resources in business, consumer behavior, furniture manufacturing and sourcing, international trade, and interior design that relate to this field of study. Selected commercial interior design publications may enhance this collection. The purpose of this annotated bibliography is to identify periodical titles generally found in libraries that support educational programs in home furnishings merchandising. Many of the titles in this bibliography would be included in a library collection that serves interior design, housing, architecture, and retailing. The publications reviewed are classified in three major areas--interior design and architectural periodicals, business and social science periodicals, and specialized trade publications. The section on interior design and architecture has publications on contract and upscale interior design, including periodicals for the professional and the consumer as well as periodicals on antiques and historic preservation. The section on business and social science includes scholarly, professional, and trade publications in the fields of marketing, retailing, and human ecology. The specialized trade publications section is comprised of periodicals pertaining to the furnishings industry, decorative accessories, home textiles, waUcoverings, and floorcoverings. The scope of publications described is limited to English-language periodicals. While the bibliography does not include government documents, librarians providing reference service in merchandising need to be aware of the wealth of relevant statistical information that is available through a collection of U.S. government serials. An attempt has been made to be not exhaustive or comprehensive, but rather representative of a diverse collection for an emerging new field. Indexing information has been obtained by consulting the Winter 1993/94 edition of Ulrich's Plus, by checking indexing information in periodical issues, and by examining selected indexing services for their lists of publications indexed. Abbreviations are those used in Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory, when available. Prices listed are rates applicable to libraries for 1994. Whenever possible, they have been taken from information within the 1994 issues. In those 50

cases where 1994 issues were not available, the publishers were contacted for subscription rate information. Since no single index or electronic database appears to be currently available specifically for this field of study, literature searching generally requires the use of multiple bibliographic sources pertaining to design, art and architecture, business, and technology. These include, but are by no means limited to, Art Index, Design & Applied Arts Index, ABI/Inform, Business Periodicals Index, Trade & Industry Index, and Applied Science & Technology lndex. Unfortunately, many specialized periodicals currently lack any indexing at all.

In addition to portraying numerous styles of furnishings, Architectural Digest includes articles describing the various stages of renovation projects. Each issue contains a number of well-written, effectively illustrated articles by members of the editorial staff. Issues typically have at least one article on the restoration or renovation of a historic residence within the United States. For example, the November/December 1993 issue has an article on the refurbishment of the Oval Office and Treaty Room at the White House. Occasionally, articles are published on preservation projects outside the United States. The January/February 1994 issue features the magazine's "Great American Home Awards" for exterior and interior restoration projects. This special feature provides the reader with a view of various historical styles. A regular book review column includes brief reviews of books on architecture, design, and social history. Another regular column, "The Architect," highlights the work of an individual architect or architectural firm. In 1995, Historic Preservation will absorb Historic Preservation News and is scheduled to change frequency to ten issues a year. It is available on microform through UMI.

Another article lists scholarships, prizes, awards, and endowment funds for education and research in the design profession and is followed by a commentary on obtaining funding for research.
