Homemade roof-strain indicator helps judge safety of bolted coal mine roof

COAL AGE, V79, NS, MAY, 1973,134P. a simple yet accurate indicating device has been developed, by the Bureau of Mines' DenveT Mining Research Centre, which measures the horizontal roof strain which accompanies the roof sag preceding a roof fall. The article describes T/lis device which is based on the concept that the horizontal distance between a pair of roof bolts~ which are installed as part of the regular support, will neccessarily increase as the roof sags, ard that increasing roof sag leads ultimately to a roof fall. The device may be made easily in the workshop, diagrams 8re included.

A clustering of these variables, or clustering of their quantities ma/~es it possible to divide the environment into taxonc~Ic types. It is also possible to determine factors which are functions of those variables and which characterise the environmentcr its parts. In this paper R and Q-mode factor analysis is applied to englneering-geological research~ with special attention being paid to establishing criteria for subdividing an environment into various aspects by its engineering - geological characteristics. 2133 C
