IN BRIEF Air Mizers survive without air Four machine tool spindles were retrofitted with Inpro/Seal Air Mizer Bearing Isolators at a major automotive manufacturing plant, but the maintenance department was too busy to connect the air lines. Eight-and-a-half months later the omission was discovered; by this point the spindles had exceeded previous run-times by a factor of two. An air supply is expected shortly. Trelleborg acquires Finnish company The Engineered Systems business of Trelleborg has acquired the Mar-Con Group, which includes Oy Mar-Con Polymers Ltd and Gromedi Oy. The privately held company, based in Tampere, Finland, employs 90 people and has annual sales of about SEK120m (US$16m). It specializes in elastomer applications for the electronics and telecom sectors, with products such as multigates, standard/special grommets and EMC gaskets. A key technology is the manufacture of thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) components molded together with metal or plastic parts. Students injured by caustic leak Four students participating in a workshop sponsored by the Canadian Water Network received minor injuries during a tour of the Irving Pulp Mill in Saint John in late June, according to a CBC News report. The students were sprayed with a weak solution of sodium hydroxide when a pipe burst; a spokeswoman said that a gasket on a pipe blew. The company is investigating the failure. EnPro purchases plastic supplier EnPro Industries has agreed to acquire Amicon Plastics, a privately held company that manufactures and sells customized fluoropolymer and engineered plastic components to semiconductor, pump and valve, oilfield and other industries. Amicon’s headquarters and manufacturing facilities are located in Houston, Texas. It employs 75 people, and will be managed as part of the EnPro Plastomer Technologies operations. Seal supplier receives award from Ford Motor Co Freudenberg-NOK recently received a Recognition of Achievement Award from Ford for its consumer-driven Six Sigma accomplishments. These awards recognize those who impact customer satisfaction by providing significant contributions in key designated areas, including environmental leadership, consumer-focused technology and consumer-driven Six Sigma. Freudenberg-NOK’s Advanced Vibration & Acoustics group received the award for optimizing the sealing isolation system and the noise, vibration and harshness characteristics for a cam cover design.
Guide will match compression packings to working conditions The third edition of the James Walker Compression Packings Guide has been published. It is available free as an information source to users, designers and specifiers of fluid handling plant with gland sealing systems. It contains details of more than 40 different compression packings for rotary and reciprocating pumps, valves, tank lids and furnace doors, as well as many other static and dynamic duties. A Quick Reference Chart helps engineers to shortlist suitable packings for an application before studying detailed specifications. There is also information on custom-designed and non-standard products. It also contains new data
on Supagraf Control, VOC fugitive emission control packing for control valves that meet TA-Luft requirements and plant designed to the European Union IPPC Best Available Technique (BAT) requirements. Other new products that have recently been reported in Sealing Technology are also included. How to maintain your pumps with Loctite Henkel Loctite has recently introduced three new guides, with the most comprehensive one aimed at the centrifugal pump industry. The Loctite pump guide is an illustrated 62-page document aimed at pump maintenance engineers. It covers products that can be used for threadlocking, liquid gaskets, bearing retention and antiseize requirements. Other documents that have been introduced recently include a
color brochure on adhesives for medical device manufacturers, and a new guide on adhesives covering both Loctite and Tereson brand products. Contact: Henkel Loctite Adhesives Ltd, Technologies House, Wood Lane End, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire HP2 4RQ, UK. Tel: +44 1442 278000, Email:

New material speeds wafer production New material meets latest directives A new graphite-based gasket material that complies with the latest TA-Luft requirements has been produced by a joint project between Swiss-based Klinger AG and GrafTech in the US. The new material, Klinger graphite laminate TSM, has been tested for compliance with the latest leakage requirements for gaskets according to VDI 2440, which permit a maximum of 1 × 10–4 mbar.l 4
(s.m) at 1 bar of helium. The leak rate on 2 mm thick sheet was 9.92 × 10–6 mbar.l (s.m). This new material has a leak rate that is reduced by a factor of 250 compared with the standard grade materials such as SLS and PSM. Busak+Shamban has helped a major semiconductor wafer manufacturer to identify the optimum O-ring material for seals in its strip system. As a part of the manufacturing process, after each processing step of film deposition, a dry strip system removes photoresist and residues from wafers. To do this the wafer is exposed to gaseous oxygen plasma at high temperatures. Previously this caused the seals within the system to quickly
deteriorate, causing frequent interruptions for seal replacement. By using the B+S material J9670 it has proved possible to increase production from 15 000–20 000 to over 50 000 wafers between seal changes.
