Other Novozymes in China Novozymes is helping to bring the latest enzyme technology to China, a country in economic transition. In China the east coast regions and cities are the driving force of an annual Chinese GDP growth of 7-8%, but the vast majority of the country is dominated by agricultural industries. Novozymes’ presence in China since 1972 has enabled the company to gain 60% of the Chinese enzyme market and this country now represents the company’s second largest market behind the USA. Beijing has become a prime centre for Novozymes’ research into detergent enzymes. BioTimes (Novozymes’ Enzyme e-zine), 11 Dec 2003, (Novozymes, website: http://www.novozymes.com)

washing detergents market with the acquisition of US rival Dial Corp of Scottsdale, AZ for approx $2.9 bn in cash. The firms signed an agreement on the acquisition on 15 Dec 2003. Dial, which produces washing powders, cosmetic products and dog and cat feed, generated a profit of $220 M on sales of $1.3 bn in 2002, all in North America, and has 2900 employees. The company is the number one on the US soaps market, having a 20% share, and number two in the US with its Purex liquid laundry detergent line (14% of the market with sales of $420 M). Sales of Purex have risen by over 10%/y over the past 3 years. Henkel, which is known for the production of Persil washing powder, generates only 14% of its total turnover of $9.7 bn/y in the USA. The acquisition of Dial should lift Henkel’s US market share to 23%, making it the second largest detergents, cleaners and personal care products company in the US. Dial generates 36% of turnover with washing detergents (Henkel 32%), 29% with cosmetics (Henkel 24%), 13% with air fresheners, and 14% with canned meat. Henkel needs to expand its structure. The company saw a 3.6% year-on-year drop in its turnover in Germany in 4Q 2003 consequent on the weak economic output in the country. Dial’s operations are more profitable (EBIT margin of 17%) than Henkel’s (EBIT margin of 7.4%), and Henkel expects an immediate rise in profits from the acquisition. It will also increase Henkel’s net debts from €600 M to €3 bn. The deal will initially be financed from existing liquidity and outside capital. Henkel will later sell a significant part of its minority holding in The Clorox Company or in Ecolab Inc, or a combination of holdings in both. The transaction still requires approval from Dial’s shareholders and the cartel authorities. Henkel expects to complete the acquisition in Apr 2004.
