Memsys partners with Concord Enviro to treat molasses wastewater India’s Concord Enviro Systems Pvt Ltd has signed an exclusive global licence agreement to use Memsys membrane distillation technology to treat molasses wastewater from the sugar industry. The Memsys patented thermal energy-based vacuum-driven multi-effect membrane distillation system (V-MEMD) is able to treat different feed waters and can run using waste heat from industry to give a high quality distillate. Memsys and Concord Enviro will set up the first large-scale field-test system in India over

the next few months, followed by another outside India. Concord Enviro will design, integrate and maintain the wastewater treatment systems, while Memsys will provide the core process modules and engineering support. Hydro International supplies sand filters for Scottish Water Hydro International’s Dynasand and Dynasand Oxy vertical sand filters have been installed at Scottish Water’s sewage treatment works in Ashgill, Coalburn and Blackridge, Scotland. The filters are part of an extensive refitting programme that Scottish Water is undertaking to meet tighter consent requirements. “At Ashgill, Scottish Water Solutions’ requirement was to reduce the ammonia content and BOD, so the two new Dynasand Oxy sand filters are installed to promote nitrification, as well as removing solids,” explained project engineer Duncan Smith

At Coalburn, a filter has been installed for final polishing through solids removal, while at Blackridge, two Dynasand Oxy sand filters are being used to remove ammonia. The work at Ashgill, Coalburn and Blackridge, which includes suspended air flotation for improved aerobic secondary treatment followed by tertiary treatment by the sand filters, is being undertaken by Jacobs Engineering Services. www.hydro-int.com

ProSep wins C$12mn in contracts for Australian offshore project ProSep Inc’s majority owned South-Korean joint venture ProSep Kolon Co Ltd has secured two contracts, together worth C$12 million, for the supply of a seawater filtration package and mercury removal unit. The customers are South Korean engineering firms who are performing engineering,

procurement and construction (EPC) work for a large liquid natural gas (LNG) project located offshore Australia. The ProSep equipment is expected to be delivered in the first quarter of 2014. www.prosep.com

Veolia Water to upgrade Namibian desalination plant Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies’ Aqua Services & Engineering (ASE) has secured a contract to upgrade and refurbish a 400 m3/day seawater desalination plant in Walvis Bay, Namibia. The project will help increase potable water supply for domestic use, and provide process water for a Walvis Bay factory. Because of the source seawater’s high organic content, ASE has to adapt the air flotation filtration system design, making it suitable for use as a pre-treatment step. “Our engineers will introduce a vortex mixer to generate micro bubbles, which are fed into the flocculated raw seawater stream,” said Christian Stöck, ASE managing director. “This will help lighter organic particles float to the surface, and allow for heavier particles to settle.”

These settled particles will then be filtered by an ultrafine filtration bed where, unlike with an additional pumping step, minimal break-up of the flocculated particles will occur. This pretreatment will ensure that the raw seawater, often affected by red tide and sulphur eruptions, meets the required standards for effective desalination in reverse osmosis membranes. ASE will install an energy recovery system to the reverse osmosis membrane system to help the plant optimise its energy consumption. “This high-end technology will help the plant reduce its reliance on municipal power sources by up to 42%,” said Stöck. H2O Innovation secures C$6.5mn in contracts for water treatment systems H2O Innovation Inc has been awarded C$6.5 million in new contracts to provide custombuilt water treatment systems to industrial and municipal endusers in the US and Canada. The Canadian company will design, assemble, deliver and commission a drinking water production system for Delaware in Ohio. With a finished water capacity of 7.1 MGD, the system will provide integrated ultrafiltration and nanofiltration technologies for the treatment of surface water and a low-pressure reverse osmosis unit for the treatment of ground water. “We are enjoying a growing demand for ultrafiltration systems in the Canadian and US markets. The City of Delaware project has a special significance for us as it will be a great demonstration platform in the Midwest US, close to the fast growing surface water treatment market in the eastern US,” said Harbans Kohli,

H2O Innovation has also secured contracts from two other US and Canadian municipalities for the design, assembly, delivery and installation of wastewater treatment packaged plants. These systems will use H2O Innovation’s patented Bio Wheel technology to supply wastewater treatment to Snow Lake, Manitoba and Grover, Colorado. Another contract will see H2O Innovation build and deliver a low-pressure reverse osmosis system for the reclamation of wastewater to an industrial end-user in Idaho. A H2O Innovation drinking water production system will also be delivered to a Canadian oil & gas customer.
