Hydrodynamics of Estuaries and Fjords. Proceedings of the 9th International Liege Colloquium on Ocean Hydrodynamics. Elsevier Oceanography Series, 23. J.C.J. Nihoul (Editor). Elsevier Scientific Publishing Company, Amsterdam, 1978, 546 pp., U.S. $ 57.00, Dfl. 130.00. This book contains the Proceedings of the 9th International Liege Colloquia on Ocean Hydrodynamics held in 1977. The stated objectives of Liege Colloquia are to address through a multidisciplinary group, recent problems and new developments in physical oceanography. The subject of the 9th colloquium was the hydrodynamics of estuaries and fjords and, not surprisingly, by far the majority of contributions were in the area of fluid mechanics. The quality of the 29 papers is generally high and significant number dealt with aspects o f estuarine dynamics which have only been recognized in recent years. These include the dynamic coupling between an estuary and adjacent coastal waters, particularly as regards longer period meteorological forcing; the influence of coriolis in reducing longitudinal dispersions in certain estuaries; and enhanced vertical mixing events in well stratified estuaries possibly due to formation of internal hydraulic jumps. References are given to a number of recent comprehensive field studies which cannot be adequately presented within the confines of a single paper. Seven papers deal specifically with fjords including a critical review of existing fjord models. The editor is to be c o m m e n d e d for including a comprehensive subject index. The book would be of considerable value to scientists, engineers and researchers engaged in estuarine studies. However, the scope of the book is fairly specialized and will be of most benefit to those who have a reasonable background in this area. The proceedings are photocopied from authors manuscripts and apart from the variable typescript the format is uniform. The book contains 546 pages of text and is priced at U.S. $57. The proceedings is r e c o m m e n d e d as a valuable contribution to on-going research in this complex field. D.L. WILKINSON D.N. FOSTER (Manly Vale, N.S.W.)
Basic Coastal Engineering. Robert M. Sorensen. John Wiley & Sons, Inc., Chichester, 1978, 227 pp., £ 14.00. According to its preface, the book "Basic Coastal Engineering" is an introductory text on wave mechanics and other coastal processes fundamental to coastal engineering. Its aim is to provide a background from which the reader
