Hydrogenics well established in US fuel cell bus programs
C
anadian-based Hydrogenics has sold another HyPM HD fuel cell power module as part of the US Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) National Fuel Cell Bus Program (NFCBP). Serving a project under the Northeast Advanced Vehicle Consortium, Hydrogenics was selected by being able to offer a flexible and cost-competitive module with a proven track record. ‘We are very pleased to announce this additional order within the FTA’s National Fuel Cell Bus Program,’ comments Daryl Wilson, president/CEO of Hydrogenics. ‘This is our third project under the auspices of the NFCBP, and we are now tied with the most projects awarded among the various fuel cell providers. Moreover, we are the only company with awards that serve all three regions – the Northeast Advanced Vehicle Consortium, serving the Northeast United States; the Center for Transportation and the Environment, serving the Southeast; and Weststart-Calstart, serving the West Coast.’ With approximately 4500 full-size transit buses sold annually in the US, Hydrogenics is well positioned to become a leading provider of zero-emission, domestically fueled power solutions for this important target market, adds Wilson. The company is a globally recognized developer and manufacturer of hydrogen generation and fuel cell products and services, serving the growing industrial and clean energy markets worldwide. Hydrogenics showcased its fuel cells at the recent NHA Conference & Hydrogen Expo in Columbia, South Carolina as part of the Proterra EcoRide zero-emissions transit bus. The Proterra bus, which will serve the Southeast region of the NFCBP, utilizes two Hydrogenics fuel cell modules, as previously announced. At the NHA show, hundreds of participants viewed the Proterra bus – the first and, so far, only bus that has been built under the auspices of the NFCBP. ‘The NHA Conference was truly a success in showcasing our buses and our partnership with Hydrogenics,’ says Dale Hill, chairman and CTO of Proterra. ‘We received a great deal of media attention, and the fuel cells have been running perfectly since being put into service earlier this year. In addition, testing at Altoona validated fuel economy in excess of 10 miles per gallon – double
the efficiency of typical diesel buses. We will continue exhibiting across the Southeast and look forward to having more buses commissioned, with Hydrogenics fuel cells, later this year.’ Contact: Hydrogenics Corporation, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Vision’s Tyrano truck passes performance testing
C
alifornia-based Vision Industries Corporation has announced that its prototype zero-emission plug-in electric/hydrogen fuel cell Tyrano™ truck has completed the first two stages of performance testing at the LA Freightliner facilities in Whittier. The second-stage testing consisted of payload and speed evaluations, with the drivetrain more than powerful enough for the full Class 8 heavyduty truck rating for an 80 000 lb (36 tonne) vehicle. Performance testing will now continue with range and fuel efficiency evaluations. ‘We designed the Tyrano to replace shorthaul diesel trucks operating in the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach,’ says Lawrence Weisdorn, COO of Vision Industries. The company is developing hydrogen fuel cell/ plug-in electric powered vehicles, which combine the superior acceleration of a battery-powered electric vehicle with the extended range provided by a hydrogen fuel cell. The Vision vehicles use plug-in electricity for the first portion of their journeys, with the hydrogen fuel cell providing extended range. Vision has also created the Cheetah™, claimed to be the world’s first plug-in electric/hydrogen fuel cell powered supercar.
