is suggestive of sinoauricular block in sinus rhythm. In the absence of any more precise explanation of its cause, this type of block may be regarded as a peculiarity of both the LAPLAOE. sinoauricular and aurieuloventricular nodes. the Injection

of Acetylcholirm.

Arch. d.

The injection of acetylcholine has been found to occasionally pro&me transient hypertension. An instance of this reaction is reported in the case of a woman 63 years old. A half hour later, the author adminThe patient had sustained a sudden left hemiplegia. Within twenty minutes, the blood presistered an injection of 0.20 Glm. of aoetylcholine. sure increased from 140/80 to 220/120, and the patient had an attack of acute pulmonary edema. Veneaection, sedation, and the intravenous administration of ouabain were followed by recovery and return of the blood pressure to its previous level. The acetylcholine which was used in this case had been in the possession of the author for seven years. It is pointed out that although the characteristio action of acetylcholine is to lower the blood pressure, the dmg may cause marked hypertension when it is no longer fresh. It is possible that acetylcholine may also elevate the blood pressure when The author has been unsuccessful, howgiven following the administration of atropine. ever, in eliciting this reaction in normal subjects. He emphasieee the danger involved in using old solutions of aeetylcholine, deterioration of whieh was undoubtedly the cause of LAPLACE. the serious complication encountered in his patient. Hypertension.

Rev. argent.

In view of existing divergence of opinion regarding the significance of the co-existence of mitral stenosis and arterial hypertension, a study was made of 150 patients, 74 with mitral stenosis and 76 with mitral disease. Arterial hypertension as indicated hy a blood pressure of 150/90 or higher was present in 28 per cent of the total group. Its incidence among women was twice that encountered among men. In patients over 40 years of age the incidence of hypertension was 50 per cent. The association of mitral stenosis and hypertension appeared about twice as frequently among Jewish patients as compared with non-Jewish patients. It is concluded from this study that arterial hypertension has the same incidence among patients who have mitral disease as occurs in the general population, and that tbe association therefore does not depend upon factors peculiar to the valvular disease. This is a review of surgical procedures used in the treatment of spastic and organic arterial di costoclavicular compression thrombosis, erythromelalgia, and posttraumatic painful states. ‘Diagnostic methods used in the study of patients with peripheral vascular diseases are discussed. The usefulness of sympatheetomy in the various disorders is evaluated. NAIDE. Uohen, s. M.: The, Surgical Management of Peripheral Vascular Dtaorders. IL Vaecular Trauma. Post-Grad. M. J. 22: 50 (Feb.) 1946. This is a review of advances and trends in the treatment of vascular injuries. @en. era1 rules regarding ligation following arterial injury are outlined. The management of the consequences of arterial contusion is described. The author reviews and describes his own approach to the management of traumatic arterial spasm, Volkmann’s eontracture, vascular repair and vein grafting, false aneurysm, ,and arteriovenous flstula. The management of the ischemie extremity in a patient who has suffered a vascular injury is outlined. N&D&
