Central site needed to speed fight against viruses Ferris Research calls for the software industry to consider establishing a central site on which to post anti-virus solutions for newly recognized viruses so that enterprizes that are under attack have a single place to find information and remedies. Ferris intends to persuade antivirus software vendors to support the establishment of a central site to speed up the deployment of countermeasures when an attack is underway. A recent Ferris Research study entitled ‘Email virus management’ served as a reminder to CIOs of the need for a multi-level approach to virus control by setting up barriers at the network boundary, at the entrance to the company messaging system, at individual messaging servers and at the desktop. The report points out that countermeasures are to be continually updated to work on the next generation of virus attack. Company News

Secure WAPbased commerce for Taiwan Baltimore Technologies has announced that Solomon Technology Corporation, a major Taiwanese systems integration and distribution company, has deployed its Baltimore Telepathy security products to launch a secure wireless portal solution for WAP-based mobile commerce in Taiwan and Greater China. The Solomon mobile commerce solution utilizes the Telepathy WAP Security Gateway (WSG) from Baltimore to enable fullstrength 128-bit encryption and server authentication capabilities to a standard WAP server. Although there are several WAP servers available on the market, all have problems in terms of implementation of the security standards specified by the global industry WAP Forum, varying from ‘no security’ to ‘unreliable security’. The Baltimore Telepathy WSG overcomes these problems by handling the security tasks on behalf of the WAP server in a manner that is fully compliant with the latest industry standards and has been tested for interoperability with all of the most common commercial WAP products. As a result, mobile subscribers in Taiwan and Greater China with new WAP devices will be able to access Internet content via the Solomon portal in the knowledge that the content is from a trusted source and that any data (such

as a credit card number or customer account details) which they send to that Internet site is strongly protected. For further information, contact Honda Chiu, Solomon Technology Corporation, on Tel: +886 2 27852919, ext. 6111; Fax: +886 2 27888002; Email: [email protected].

iD2 to roll out time-stamping technology iD2 Technologies, a provider of PKI solutions, has partnered with German time-stamping specialist, timeproof. The partnership will allow organizations using iD2’s user authentication solutions to stamp every online transaction with the official time. By ‘time stamping’ Internet user’s transactions, companies can eliminate the hazard of contracts, and other online documents, being manipulated to show fraudulent dates and times. A number of European countries are looking at time stamping as a means of allowing Internet users to assign a legally recognized date and time to an online communication. iD2 is working alongside several technology partners to provide solutions that consider such regulatory frameworks and legal obligations. A spokesperson from iD2 explains that, “Time is one of the most important regulative criteria for the recording of business transactions. The timeproof time signature ensures business transactions can be assigned to a specific time event. Now, when used alongside digital certificates

created with iD2’s certification manager, organizations have a permanent record of both the customer’s identity and the calendar details of the transaction. Documents that need to be universally recognized as legally binding will all benefit from time stamping; these could include contracts, invoices, billing schedules and even internal documents.” iD2 and timeproof will roll out the technology, which uses time signals from the worldwide Global Positioning System (GPS), across Europe. Fraud News

A third of fraudsters remain unpunished A recent survey entitled ‘Fraud — The Unmanaged Risk’, published by Ernst & Young’s Fraud Investigation Group, has concluded that management are both failing to manage the risk of fraud occurring within their organizations and are not learning from their mistakes once a fraud has been perpetrated. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that fraud is not just restricted to one company or one country, but in the new connected economy, it is crossborder and, in many cases, global. Clearly, the need to put fraud prevention measures in place and to perform regular reviews of the likelihood of 3
