R&D reports Hayes, l P, Mudge, T, Stout, Q F, Colley, S and Palmer, J 'A microprocessor-based hypercube supercomputer' IEEE Micro Vol 6 No 5 (October 1986) pp 6-17 Interconnecting a large number of microprocessors is the most straightforward and least expensive way to build a supercomputer, say the authors. An n-dimensional hypercube computer is one interconnection scheme that achieves a distributed memory, processor-to-processor linked system, and is characterized by the presence of N = 2n processors interconnected as an n-dimensional binary cube. The paper discusses the NCUBE/ten as an example of this type of system architecture.

Mudge, T N, Hayes, l P, Buzzard, G D and Winsor, D C 'Analysis of multiple-bus interconnection networks' J. Parallel and Distributed CompuL Vol 3 No 3 (September 1986) pp 328-343 Interconnection networks for multiprocessor systems, such as crossbar or multistage networks, are expensive and require special implementation. Single bus systems are, in contrast, inexpensive and simple to implement, but bandwidth and fault tolerance are limited. An extension to this, however, is to employ several shared buses. The buses can be configured to provide a range of trade-offs between bandwidth, connection cost and reliability. The paper develops a discrete stochastic model for the bandwidth of complete and partial multiple-bus systems.

systems, say the authors, and are experimentally determinable. Unlike other performance measures, these measures, it is claimed, provide the realtime multiprocessor controller with a natural link to a controlled process.

The Berkeley 4.2 bsd release of Unix offers a 'major strength' in the interprocess communication facilities it provides via an abstraction known as 'sockets', say the author. The paper is a tutorial on these facilities with socket applications running over an Ethernet local network.
