III STUDYING STUDENTS AS THEY WORK ON MATHEMATICAL TASKS Much recent work in mathematics education is characterized by focusing attention on what students actually do, if we watch carefully while they work on some mathematical task. This often gets to the heart of what we care about most: how students find their way through a mathematical problem. The report in this section is an example of the use of this methodology.
