Professor Josef Heinhold's scientific interests are in the geometry of numbers, applied mathematics, complex variables, statistics, analog and hybrid computers, and operations research . He has published numerous books and journal articles in these areas . Dr. Heinhold was born in Dusseldorf on July 4, 1912. He studied mathematics and physics at the University of Munich and the Technical University Munich . He holds a Dr .rer.nat . degree (1938) from the University of Munich and obtained the venia legendi in pure and applied mathematics from the Technical University Munich in 1940 . He subsequently joined the faculty of the Technical University Munich where he served in numerous capacities, including Professor (since 1955), Director of the Institute for Applied Mathematics (starting in 1957), and Dean of the School of Sciences (1966).
