First, the reevaluated subcellular distributions of sex steroid, thyroxin (T4), triiodothyronine (T,), and vitamin D,, receptors are presented and contrasted to the reported subcellular distribution of glucocorticoid receptors. Second, the functional significance of the different domains in the receptor proteins and the genes that code for them are elucidated. Third, the multiple disease states that involve steroid hormones and their receptors. The main topics covered are as follows: -theoretical models of steroidal action; -molecular and genetic aspects of steroid receptors; -identification of steroid receptors in “non-target” clinically relevant tissues; -steroids, steroid receptors, and disease.
