New Book Annotations Diseases of the Jaws: Diagnosis and Treatment. van der Waal I. Copenhagen, Denmark, Munksgaard, 199 1, 304 pages, illustrated This comprehensive treatise deals with all aspects of jaw lesions, including congenital and developmental disturbances, inflammatory lesions, tumors, cysts, systemic diseases, and miscellaneous conditions. Also included is a chapter on temporomandibular joint disorders. Each condition is defined, and the clinical and radiologic aspects and the diagnosis and treatment are discussed. The numerous colored clinical photographs, excellent radiographs, and selected photominographs add to the value of the material presented. Aesthetic Rhinoplasty (ed 2). Aiach G, Levignac J. New York, NY, Churchill Livingstone, 199 1, 174 pages, illustrated, $89.00 The authors of this book take a unique approach to the subject of rhinoplasty, emphasizing that the proper operation involves more than pure geometry, but rather has to consider the personality of the face. To accomplish this objective, they first discuss surgical anatomy and physiology and preoperative analysis and planning. This material is then used as a basis for selection of operative procedures, which are thoroughly described. The book ends with a discussion of secondary rhinoplasty and case studies of difficult management problems. Management of Cleft Lip and Palate. Hudson JW (ed), with 32 contributors. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinics of North America, vol 3, no 3, 1991, 754 pages, illustrated This volume brings together the thoughts and experiences of a multidisciplanary group of authors on all aspects of cleft lip and palate management. The topics discussed range from organization of the cleft palate-craniofacial team to primary and secondary correction of the various conditions encountered. The management of related orthognathic, nasal, lip, and craniofacial deformities also is covered. Other chapters deal with the use of otthotics and obturation problems involving velopharyngeal incompetence, the effect of cleft lip and palate on speech and breathing, and esthetic considerations.

LITERATURE

Aesthetic Contouring of the Craniofacial Skeleton. Ousterhout DK (ed), with 46 contributors. Boston, MA, Little, Brown, 199 1, 576 pages, illustrated, $275.00 The current methods used for craniofacial recontouring are thoroughly described in this comprehensive book. The material is divided into four sections: introduction, patient evaluation and diagnosis, materials for augmentation, and surgical methods and long-term results. The majority of the book is devoted to treatment chapters and all areas of the craniofacial skeleton are discussed. Numerous illustrations accompany the detailed text. Atlas of the Human Skull. Sampson HW, Montgomery JL, Henryson GL. College Station, TX, Texas A&M University Press, 1991, 200 pages, illustrated, $49.50 cloth, $29.50 paperback Photographs of the actual skull and disarticulated bones rather than drawings are used to illustrate this atlas. The pictures are large, clear, and labeled with letters and numbers to avoid overcrowding. The legends, which are on the opposing page, have the information grouped by name of bone, foramina, and landmarks. Separate illustrations are used to show muscle attachments, and anthropological and radiographic landmarks. Aesthetic Facial Surgery. Krousc CJ, Mangat DS, Pastorek N (eds), with 53 contributors. Philadelphia, PA, Lippincott, 199 1, 800 pages, 1265 illustrations, $225.00 Part one of this textbook covers a broad range of topics related to surgery of the nose. The basic approach to rhinoplasty is presented first, followed by chapters covering specific clinical problems. Part two deals with management of the aging face and neck. As in the first section, the basic approach to patient evaluation and rhytidectomy also are discussed and this is followed by descriptions of techniques for correcting specific deformities. Ancillary procedures, such as suction lipectomy, otoplasty, mentoplasty, malarplasty, and orthognathic surgery, also are described. Rigid Fixation for Maxillofacial Surgery. Tucker MR, Terry BC, White RP Jr et al (eds), with 10 contributors. Philadelphia, PA, Lippincott, 1991, 408 pages, 522 illustrations, $160.00 This text focuses on the application of rigid fixation techniques to fractures of the maxillofacial region and in orthognathic surgery. It includes material on the biological basis for treatment and on existing technology. The various chapters also discuss a variety of clinical problems and specific techniques, as well as the management of potential complications and long-term sequelae.

Immunology and Infectious Diseases of the Mouth, Head, and Neck. Zambito RF, Cleri DJ (eds), with 24 contributors. St Louis, MO, Mosby Year Book, 199 1,425 pages, illustrated

Benign Lesions of the Jaws. Assael LA (ed), with 14 contributors. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinics of North America, vol 3, no 1, 1991, 235 pages, illustrated

The uniqueness of this book is that the emphasis is on the head and neck region. It begins with general discussions of the immune system, host-parasite relationships, and antimicrobial agents, and then focuses on the various oral and orofacial infections of interest to the dentist and dental specialist. Chapters dealing with the dental implications of sexually transmitted diseases, geographic and tropical orofacial infections, and epidemiology also are included.

Although the specific pathologic conditions have not changed, improvements in diagnostic techniques, better understanding of biologic behavior, improved classification, and longer-term follow-up have led to considerable improvement in the management of these conditions. This volume brings together outstanding surgeons and oral pathologists to update these various aspects related to the neoplastic, cystic, vascular, fibro-osseous, and fibrous lesions of the jaws.
