In memoriam Daniel M. Ware a key member of the CCCC/MODEL Task Team during the development of the NEMURO model. Throughout the process of building NEMURO Dan shared his insights on theoretical and practical issues regarding the realistic representation of complex marine ecosystems with mathematical simulation models. His knowledge of the biological oceanography of the north Pacific, fisheries ecology and on the role of microbial processes was invaluable. In addition to being a leading scientist, Dan was always most gracious and approachable, being as comfortable talking with beginning students as he was with international dignitaries. We have seen the passing of a great person and friend. He will be dearly missed. It is with great honor that we dedicate this special issue of Ecological Modelling to Dan. From the editors, and on behalf of all contributors. Michio J. Kishi ∗ Hokkaido University, Graduate School of Fisheries Sapporo, Hokkaido 060-0813, Japan

We dedicate this volume to the memory of our colleague, mentor and friend, Dr. Daniel M. Ware. Dan passed away on July 31, 2005 after a courageous battle with cancer. Dan had a long and productive career as a leading ocean and fisheries scientist with significant contributions in the fields of fish bioenergetics, stock-recruitment theory, fisheries oceanography, and early life history of fish including cod, mackerel, and herring. He collaborated closely with PICES nation scientists in comparative studies of the eastern and western Pacific oceanic ecosystems. In 2005, Dan was awarded the Wooster Award for his contributions to marine sciences and to PICES, and he was the recipient of the Timothy R. Parsons award for his contributions to inter-disciplinary marine sciences. Dan was the first Chairman of PICES Science Board and helped guide the establishment of the PICES/GLOBEC Climate Change and Carrying Capacity (CCCC) Program. Once he completed his term as Chairman of the Science Board, he became
