YURI ALEXANDROVICH POBEDONOSTSEV

1907-1973 (translated from the Russian) Yuri Alexandr°vich Pobedonostsev, a pioneer in rocket and space technology, doctor and professor of technical sciences and Corresponding Member of the International Academy of Astronautics, died on 3 October 1973. In 1930, upon terminating his studies at the Moscow Serge Ordjonikidze Aviation Institute, he worked in the division of general theoretical studies and the flight research section of the Central Aero-Hydrodynamics Institute, where he was personally concerned with experimental research in the field of high velocity and air-breathing engines. Yuri Pobedonostsev undertook practical work in this new field of science and technology with the "Group for the Study of Jet Propulsion" (GIRD), which he helped to found in 1931 together with S. P. Korolev, F. A. Tsander and M. K. Tikhonravov. The GIRD team under the direction of Yuri Pobedonostsev produced the first supersonic wind tunnel in the U.S.S.R. and conducted the world's first in-flight tests of air-jet engines (with solid fuel). Later, at the Reaction Research Institute, Yuri Pobedonostsev worked on the theory of powder rocket engines and made important contributions to the development of the famous Katyusha rocket. He was the author of more than a hundred papers on experimental gasdynamics, the theory of air-breathing engines, internal ballistics powder rockets, the history of the development of rocketry and space science and technology, and many other subjects. Yuri Pobedonostev devoted his whole life to rocket technology. He was among those who laid the foundations for today's cosmonautics. Many outstanding Soviet scientists, cosmonauts, constructors, and engineers are proud to call themselves his students. In October 1973, Yuri Pobedonostsev went to Baku for the 24th International Astronautical Congress, with a paper entitled: "From the History of the Organization and Activity of the Rocket Research Institute (RNII) 1934-1949". On the opening day, he died suddenly upon his arrival at the Congress building. Yuri Alexandrovich Pobedonostsev was an outstanding figure, a great scholar, theoretician and experimenter, a man of fine, sincere character, who will always have a place in the memory and heart of future generations.
