As an oral and maxillofacial surgery educator for the past 20 years, I have tried to encourage this thought process in all my students and residents. I was extremely pleased to see this basic surgical tenet reinforced in this article.
To the Editor:—I read with interest the article ‘‘Multiple calcifying hyperplastic dental follicles: A case report and literature review’’ by Desai et al.1 The information presented gives us all much to think about when faced with cystic lesions of apparent dental follicle origin. Most telling for me, however, was a simple phrase in the last paragraph, which ‘‘.emphasizes the importance of submission of every single surgically removed tissue for histopathological examination [italics added].’’ This practice was followed in my private office for 37 years. Although patients were often upset at the extra (laboratory) fees, the lives saved proved the worthiness of this routine.
