882179 Application of seismics for selecting working panels Schroeter, P Proc 13th World Mining Congress, Improvement of Aline Productivity and Overall Economy by Modern Technology, Stockholm, June 1987 V1, P95-I02. Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema, 1987 Coal extraction from high performance longwall faces can be hindered by unforeseen geological problems. Reflection seismic profiles define the structural features of a deposit, but cannot detect faults on the small scale necessary for panel selection. A series of tests was carried out to improve the resolution of this technique, using modified methods and equipment, and in-seam seismics was also tried. The latter technique is now in current use, the former still requires refinement.

882183 Experience of geological-engineering investigations of andesitebasaltic lavas of Armenia by seismoacoustic and radiation logging methods Gorshkov, Y M; Kochetkov, P F; Nikolaeva, T M Proc 5th International Congress International Association of Engineering Geology, Buenos Aires, 20-25 October, 1986 V1, P365-370. Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema, 1986 Geophysical examinations for foundations on andesite-basaltic lavas are described. The depth of the outflows varied from 3-20m. Seismic profiling, seismoacoustic sounding and profiling, gamma-gamma density logging, ultrasonic prospecting, and gamma ray logging were the techniques used to identify the geological structure and texture, and determine the mechanical and physical properties of the rock. Properties were seen to vary greatly within the outflows.

The seismic cone penetration test (SCPT) uses an electronic cone penetrometer into which is incorporated a small, rugged velocity seismometer. Its use combines the seismic downhole method with CPT logging and allows rapid, reliable, and economic determination of stratigraphic, strength, and modulus information in one sounding. SCPT results are presented and compared to those of conventional seismic techniques.

882181 Subsurface soil monitoring via acoustic emissions Koerner, R M; Lord, A E In: Use of In Situ Tests in Geotechnical Engineering (papers to the Conference, Blacksburg, 23-25 June 1986) P176-190. Publ New York: ASCE, 1986 (ASCE Geotechnical Special Publication No 6) Acoustic emission monitoring is introduced and previous applications reviewed. Two applications to geotechnical engineering are described. Preconsolidation pressures can be evaluated from results of pressuremeter tests with an AE sensor attached to the pressuremeter. Results are in reasonable agreement with laboratory measurements. A multichannel AE pickup system to detect grout movement in a soil mass has been developed and tested on a small scale. Other potential uses are considered.

882182 Application of comprehensive geological exploration in tunneling prospecting He Zhenning Proc 5th International Congress International Association of Engineering Geology, Buenos Aires, 20-25 October, 1986 VI, P301-309. Publ Rotterdam." A A Balkema, 1986 In route selection for tunnelling, good results can be obtained if conventional mapping and physical exploration are augmented by geophysical exploration. By reference to case studies, geological structures in which resistivity, seismic, electromagnetic sounding or direct current methods should be used are indicated. The need for physical logging of drill holes and comprehensive analysis of exploration data is emphasised.

882184 In situ testing in underground backfilled stopes Scoble, M; Piciacchia, L; Robert, J M CIM Bull V80, N903, July 1987, P33-38 The use of the pressuremeter for in situ testing of backfill in 5 Canadian mines is reported. Deformation modulus and limit pressure, a parameter related to effective strength, are measured. Instrumentation and procedures are described. Mechanical properties of the various fills used and their variation with grading and cementation are presented. This approach is a simple and economical means to assess backfill properties for both mine design and placement quality control.

882185 Interpretation of drilling parameters for ground characterization in exploration and development of quarries Peck, J; Scoble, M J; Carter, M Trans lnst Min Metall (Sect B Appi Earth Sci) V96. Aug 1987, PBI41-B148 The automated drill monitor (ADM system) monitors effective thrust on drill bit and instantaneous rate of drill penetration. Recorded drilling parameters can be correlated with lithological and geomechanical properties, and algorithms allow classical geomechanical parameters to be estimated. Plots of variation of these parameters with depth are of use in initial design and development stages of quarries. The current ADM system can resolve property changes over intervals less than 0.5cm. Borehole cameras have confirmed that the ADM can determine the nature and location of in situ fractures. Examples of the application of the ADM in exploration and design are presented.

882186 Marine site investigation and assessment of calcareous sand behaviour at the Campos Basin, Brasil Ortigao, J A R; Capellao, S L F; De Lamonica, L Proc 5tb International Symposium on Offshore Engineering, Rio de Janeiro, 16-20 September 1985 V5, P238-255 Publ London: Pentech, 1986 Seabed site investigation using the most up to date techniques is described. In situ CPT tests were carried out in drill holes at varying depths, and samples taken using thin walled or split spoon samplers. Laboratory tests included carbonate analysis, measurement of density and water content, sieve analysis, direct shear, classification, and crushability tests. The profile
