852173 Deflection measurements of the upstream asphaltic membrane of Marchlyn dam Penman, A D M; Hussain, A lnt Water Power Dam Constr 1136, N9, Sept 1984, P33-37 Marchlyn dam forms the upper reservoir of the Dinorwic pumped-storage scheme in N Wales, UK. It is one of the first British dams to use an upstream asphaltic membrane as the watertight element. A simple trolley device was developed and used to measure the membrane deflection over the full height of the dam in order to study the behaviour under loading from the reservoir water. The observed deflections of the membrane showed the dam to be stiffer than expected and that the rockfill and moraine provided excellent support for the asphaltic concrete.

852175 Field performance of embankment over soft soil Thamm, B R J Geotech Engng Div ASCE VllO, NGTg, Aug 1984, Pl1261146 The design, construction, and performance of an approach embankment constructed on soft soil is reviewed. Due to the poor subsoil conditions, the design included a combination of surcharge fills, stage construction, installation of vertical drains, and a horizontal fabric layer. To investigate the behaviour of the embankment during construction, field measurements of horizontal and vertical movements with a combined settlementinclinometer tube were undertaken. During and after the field tests, finite element analyses were performed using the developed soil data. The analyses show that early measurements of movements can assist in correcting laboratory data. Thus changes in stage construction and in the design of vertical drains during the construction procedure are possible. Due to the chosen construction procedures, a more economical design of a pile foundation against horizontal forces induced by the abutment fill could be used.
852176 Study of two field cases involving undrained creep Redman, PG; Poulos, H G J Geotech Engng Div ASCE VIIO, NGT9, Sept 1984, P13071321 An analysis for investigating undrained creep of a viscoelasticplastic soil mass is briefly described. Any form of undrained creep response can be considered, while failure is incorporated through a Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. This analysis is applied to two published field studies of embankments on soft clay, the East Atchafalaya Levee Test Section 3 and the M.I.T. Test Embankment. In each case, it is demonstrated that the variation with time of vertical and horizontal movements in the underlying soil, can be reasonably well-predicted. Auth.
852177 Foundations of Ridracoli Dam (In French) Rossi, P R Rev Fr Geotech N26, 1984, P39-54
The Ridracoli arch-gravity dam, in the Central Appennines, rests on a stratified rock mass consisting of alternating sandstone and marl. The most significant geological and structural characteristics and the in-situ tests for the mechanical characterization of the rock mass: plate bearing test. hydraulic pressure chamber, fiat jack. shear test. are presented. Solutions adopted for stabilization of the abutments during excavation are described, as well as the instrumentation for the control of the deformations of the foundations.
852178 Project of Grand'Maison dam. Conception and presentation of some deformation calculations (in French) Clerdouet, D; Post, G Rev Fr Geoteeh N27. 1984, P27-41 The design and conception of the Grand Maison Dam, France, including site characterization and testing of constituent materials is described. Results of numerical analyses, made under plane strain conditions, simulating sequential embankment construction and using elastoplastic constitutive law derived from the critical state concept, are presented.
852179 Construction of Grand'Maleon dam (French Alpes) (In French) Trocherie, C Rev Fr Geoteeh N27, 1984, P43-50 Conditions determining the design of the Grand Maison Dam, France, are outlined. Aspects of construction of special interest are: treatment of the dam's banks; foundation treatment by means of injections; quarrying for rock fill material and earth deposits; material re-filling; material control; and structure auscultation.

Publ South Africa: South African National Group on Rock Mechanics, 1984 The objectives of a monitoring programme for embankment fills, together with typical instrumentation, are discussed. A case study of an embankment founded on soft clays is presented.
852181 Prediction of performance of AIT test embankment Pouios, H G Univ of Sydney. School of Civil and Mining Engineering research report NR453, June 1983, 16P The predicted and measured settlement behaviour of a test embankment constructed at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) were compared. The predictions were made using available soil data from laboratory tests in conjunction with relatively simple settlement analyses based on elasticity and one-dimensional consolidation theory. Original predictions produced before the test data were available showed reasonable agreement with time-settlement behaviour. The soil parameters were adjusted to obtain a better overall fit to actual measurement. This altered model was then used to predict settlement in later stages of construction.
