022-D Trauma 43,9% has some dysaesthesia while neurologic tests showed 56.1% of the patients to have dysaesthesia. Hypo- or anaesthesia was found in 78,6%, hypersensitivity in 7,1%, hypoalgesia in 33,0%, thermohypaesthesia in 25,8%, thermalgesia in 15,4%, and impaired tactile discrimination in 22,1% of the affected patients, Two thirds of the cases with primary posttraumatic and preoperative sensory dificits had persistent sensory deficits. While complete anaesthesia predominated initially, hypaesthesia was most often seen at latest follow-up. There are significant correlations with the degree of fragment displacement, as well as with the timing and the type of definite fracture therapy (Chi-square-test). The diagnostic value of the standardised interview and examination is discussed.

The following results were obtained: (1) Missing teeth, 6.3 (range, 0 to 26); number of biting molars, 2.4 (range, 0 to 4); number falling into Eichner's category, A: 31, B-P: 7, B-Q: 4, B-R: 4; C: 5; total bridge resistance for each tooth, 90.2 (range, 10 to 126). (2) Mean number of total maxillofacial findings, 4.7 (range, 2 to 10). (3) Mean maximum jaw opening, 44.0 mm (range, 28 to 58.) (4) Maximum jaw tapping in 10 seconds, 33.8 (range, 9 to 6O). (5) Mean contact area, 8.6 ram2 (range, 1 to 37.9); mean maximal force, 103 MPa (range, 56.9 to 120); total force, 410.6 N (range, 13.0 to 1626.4); masticatory efficiency rate, 75.3% (range, 22 to 100). From multiple regression analysis, we have registered the following results: multiple correlation coefficient, 0.761; coefficient of determination, 0.579.

11. Changing Trends in the Treatment of Zygomatico-orbital Complex Fractures. A 12-year evaluation of the methods we used

Zachariades, N., Mezitis, M. During the period 1993-1996, 1055 patients with mandibular fractures were seen in our unit. In 51 patients infections had occurred which required special treatment. These patients were mainly males (69%), while their age ranged from 20-60 years. The treatment protocol existed of debridement, reposition of the fragments and fixation using osteosynthesis plates. All patients received antimicrobial treatment through an intraarterial route using a pump connected to either the facial or carotid artery.

10. Assessment of Masticatory Disturbance in Patients with Occupational Maxillofacial Injury

Nakajima, H. l, Saito, T,1, Wada, A), Okada, T), Matsuura, M. 2, Seto, K. 2 1Department of OS, Kantorosai Hospital, kanagawa, Japan, 2First Department of OMS, School of Dentistry, Tsurumi University, Kanagawa, Japan This study was designed to investigate masticatory disturbance in patients with occupational maxillofacial injury. During the three-year period from November, 1993, to January, 1997, 51 patients (43 males and 8 females; mean age, 44 years, range, 21 to 69) were examined on the basis of (1) dental findings, (2) number of disturbances, (3) maximum jaw opening, (4) maximum rate of jaw tapping in a 10-second period, (5) and occlusional findings by the Dental Prescaled (Fuji Photo Film Co.), and the masticatory efficiency rate was calculated from the results of a questionnaire assessing the ability to chew 50 different foods. Multiple regression analysis was used for investigating the relationship between masticatory efficiency rate and the items (1) to (5).

General District Hospital of Attica (K.A.T. -formerly: "Apostle Paul's" Accidents Hospital) Kifissia, Athens, Greece One thousand two hundred and seventy-three patients with fracture of the zygomatico-orbital complex and 196 patients with fracture of the zygomatic arch, who were admitted between 1984 and 1995, were evaluated. Surgical reduction was carried out in 1551 patients while in 401 patients reduction was not thought to be necessary. The Gillie's approach was used in 514 cases, intraosseous wiring in 89 cases, miniplate osteosynthesis in 322 cases, Roger-Anderson pins in 180 cases, antral packing in 17 cases and elevation with a hook in 28 cases. The best results were achieved with the use of miniplates, applied at one or several sites of the fractured complex, occasionally used in combination with other methods such as Roger-Anderson pins. Fixation with miniplates offers thus, the most reliable method available today in the treatment of zygomatico-orbital complex fractures and has practically replaced every other method in our Institution. The increased cost and occasionally the necessity to remove the plates are the main disadvantages of the method.
