Properties of Rocks and Soils 832005 ON THE RELATIONSHIP ~ FO~IATION RESISTIVITY FACTC~ AND POROSITY Perez-Rosales, C SOC Petr E~@r J, V22, N~, Aug i~82~ P~31-5~6 A theory leading to a new equation rela~Ix~ formation resistivity factor a~i p o r o s i t y is described. It is shown that the equations most widely used in practice are special cases of this equation. The validity of the equation is established usl~g data for ssx~leto,~s, and pe~kings and suspensions of particles. For the case of r,~tural rock, the theory i s shown to confirm Archie's equation.

P285-3o5 Describes how the compliance of a Joint can be Incc~p~rated into the compliance of a Joint set which, together with other Joint set compliamces and the compliance of the intact rock, forms the compliance of the Jointed rock mass. It is then shown that in an amalagoua way the stiffness of a reinforced Jointed rock mass, cont a i n i ~ sets of fully grouted bars or cables, is given by t h e s ~ of t h e stiffness of t h e ~ointed rock mass a~i each of the sets of relnforce~ent. Examples of the compliance matrices fc~ Jointed rock masses of particular interest are given, eg orthogonal Joint sets. A method of i~creasi~g the stiffness of a Jointed rock mass as a result of insertion of sets of reinforcement is then discussed. 83200~ IN SI~J STRESS DETERMINATION BY IOWA S I ' ~ ~AZE Hamdy, R L; Remm~s, B; Moldt, S J Geotech Engng Div ASCE, V108, N~TI1, Nov

1962, Plh-OS-lh.22 Lateral soil pressure is very sensitive to disturbance: a step-tapered blade was developed to campensate for this disturbance by -~asuring soil pressures on 3 thicknesses of blades s~d extrapolating for t h e hypothetical ~essure at zero blade thickness. The nature of the extrapolation was fomxl to be exponential, with the slope related to the soil comI~ession iDdex. In sltu stresses measured in flne-graimed soils were found to agree with s t r e s s e s f r c ~ o w ~ b u r d e n ;~'esluresj elastic the(~,,"y~ azld l:~'essuremeters. M e a ~ e d lateral stress ratios were found to be in the acceptable range of 0.~-1.5, in ~atural soil deposits. The stepped-blade method was deemed not suitable for dense sa~Is.

832008 INFLUENCE OF DIAGENETIC MICROFABRIC ON OIL SANDS BEHAVIOUR Barnes~ D J; Dusseault I M B Can J Earth Sci, V19, E~A, April 1982, P804-818 Scannlmg electron microscopy was used to examime specimens of oll samd materials from Alberta~ C~, i~dlcetir~ that a large ~ - b e r of grain contacts had altered from tangential to lor~ concavo-convex. S t r e r ~ 1 compressibilityI add imdex tests (density, grain size) were perfarmed on oil-free samdstone samples from the oil-bearing strata of Alberta. Results iDdlcate~ that increased grain contact area and graln interlock cause a reduction in compressibility add an iDcrease in shear atremgth of the materials. The influence of porosity, mlmeralo~y, grain size, add degree of diagenetic alteration on the behaviour of granular materials is ~4iscussed, add a classification for degree of dlagenetic alteration add its influence on shear strength is presented.
