Whereas the parameters for the non-cohesive materials can be expressed as functions of the effective octahedral normal and the maximum shear stresses, the parameters far the expansive clay are shown to be independent of the total octahedral normal stress and can be expressed in terms of soil suction and the maxim~n shear stress. Also a combination of triaxlal tests with isotropic pressure and with constant octahedral normal stress can provide all the necessary data without volume change measurements.

Creep data obtained from nahcolite- and dawsonite-rich oil shales provides a best fit to a modified power equation.
