mechanical characteristics of the discontinuities gave friction angles of 35-49 Degrees. Fabric data incorporated in an empirical design model reveal a medium to high strength rock mass. RQD and other systems are invoked to provide guidelines for support. A finite element analysis indicates that failure of intact rock is unlikely. Avail: CSIRO, 372 Albert St, East Melbourne. Based on an experimental investigation of the process of combined breaking-up of soils by the action of UHF electrcmagnetic energy and mechanical forces, numerical data are obtained on the relative reduction of traction loads and the value of energy cons~mptlon for the extraction of frozen soils. It is shown that the UHF electromagnetic field effect permits mechanical load on wcrkimg perts of %he soil-breaking machinery to be reduced very considerably.
