BOOK REVIEWS - BOOK NEWS Edited by P. VAN REMOORTERE G.G. Boulaye and D.W. Lewin: Computer Architecture. Transactions of the NATO Advanced Study Institute, held in St. Raphael, France, 12-24 September 1976. Published by D. Reidel Publishing Company, Dordrecht-Holland/BostonUSA. in 1977. Dfl. 70.-or US $28.00. ISBN 90-227-0803-7. This book presents as formal papers nearly all of the lectures given at the Nato Advanced study institute on Computer Architecture held at St. Raphael, France from September 12-24, 1976. Computer architecture is a very diverse and expanding subject, consequently the lectures concentrated on live main subject areas: specific computer architectures, language oriented machines, associative processing, computer networks and specification and design methods. In addition, an overall emphasis was placed on distributed and parallel processing and the need for an integrated hardware-software approach to design. Though some introductory material is included, this book is primarily intended for workers in the field of computer science and engineering who wish to update themselves on current topics in computer architecture. Contents: G. Bell: What we have learned from the PDP-11. G. Boulaye: Structured Systems. K. Bowden: Introduction to computer architecture. D. Davies: Introduction to packetswitching. Modelling as a tool of network design. Security in networks. H. Gallaire: Influence of high level languages on computer architecture. F. Heath: Specification and evaluation of computer systems. R. Lea: Associative processing of non-numerical information. D. Lewin: Introduction to associative processors. F. Summer: An assessment of the MUS computer systems. W. Wilner: Problem language oriented architecture. These papers will be listed with abstract in the bibliographical section.
systems. M. Metivier. Advances in the theory of stochastic integration and applications. Z. Sidak: Miscellaneous topics in Markov chains with a general state space, Volume A contains also 58 communications. Most of this papers have a mathematical character and are written in English, French, German or Russian. The papers susceptible to interest our readers will be listed, with abstract in our bibliographical section. H. Nicholson: Structure of Interconnected Systems. IEE Control Engineering Series 5. Published in March 1978 by Peter Peregrinus Ltd. on behalf of the Institution of Electrical Engineers (South Gate House, Stevenage, Herts SGl 1HQ England). $12.00 - ISBN o-901223-69-7. Interest in large-scale systems problems in many fields of study. concerned for example with industrial processes, business organisations and the behaviour of biological systems is developing significantly. Such systems will be characterised by an interconnection of elements within a topological structure, and it will usually be desirable to relate the overall system performance to the functional relationships defining the subsystems, in order to reduce the complexity of analysis. The present work is concerned with similar problems in the general area of systems theory, and attempts to introduce a unifying theme based on the properties of electrical networks and the general scattering problem. The theme of the work is directed to the study of system structure and decomposition based on the properties of electrical networks and scattering theory, and the related problems of linear quadratic control and estimation. Contents: The electrical network problem. Kron’s polyhedron model. Curve fitting with Kron’s polyhedron model. Structural properties of interconnected systems. Optimality conditions in polyhedron model and scattering problem. Decomposition of system structure. Conclusions;

Published by IPC Science and Technology Press, IPC House, 32 High Street, Guilford, Surrey, England GUl 3EW. ISBN o-90285-92-2. This volume contains papers presented at the 1978 Conference on Computer Simulation held in Chester on 4-6 April 1978 and organised by the United Kingdom Simulation CounCit. The papers fall mainly in the sphere of continuous simulation but there is also a small number of contributions on discrete aspects. The majority of these papers originate in the UK
