FAR-INFRARED SPECTRAL OBSERVATIONS FROM THE NASA LEAR JET D. WARD Center for Radiophysics and Space Research, Cornell University, Ithaca, U.S.A. ABSTRACT
Results of recent observations of the spectra of planets, HII regions and the galactic center at wavelengths between 45 ~_lmand 115 pm are presented. At a resolving power of about 15, HIT regions and the galactic center have smooth spectra which can be fitted by diluted black body curves. The infrared emission of Saturn and its rings shows a decrease in brightness temperature toward longer wavelengths.

ABSTRACT
We have already given a review of Fourier-spectroscopy applied to astronomical problems”’ and a very complete review of applications to planetary atmospheres has been given recently by Hanel and Kunde. (21 Consequently we shali merely list here some even more recent results, because the field is progressing rapidly. On Mars molecular oxygen emission has been detected by Noxon et al. 13) On Jupiter water vapour has been found by Larson et al.‘“’ and also phosphine by Larson et ~1.‘~’The most recent analysis of near infrared Jupiter spectra is the one of de Bergh.“’ An interferometer similar to the highly successful Mariner 9 one will be flown in the MJS mission.“) Finally the results of Astroid surface composition studies have been described by Larson.(‘) REFERENCES 1.
