Dyneon opens new plant for processing additives Dyneon Specialty Additives reports that it has built a second manufacturing facility for its Dynamar T M PPA processing aids located in Antwerp, Belgium. The company says that it required the additional capacity to meet growing demand for Dynamar FX 9613 PPA and Dynamar FX 5920A PPA. According to Dyneon, these free-flowing fluoropolymer processing additives are used in polyolefins to optimize process conditions in a wide range of applications. They provide extrusion benefits such as melt fracture elimination, reduced gels and reduced die buildup. The new European plant is said to be producing material that is consistent with that available from the original facility in the USA. Rik Nuyttens, European program manager for Dyneon Specialty Additives, says that several new products are also being scaled up at this facility. "Eventually this site will provide a full range of speciality additives", he adds.

MARKETS Infrastructure applications for FRP composites forecast to value $1.4 billion by 2010 According to a study published recently by Composites Worldwide, Inc, markets for fibrereinforced plastic (FRP) composites in emerging infrastructure applications will grow by more than 525% worldwide between 2000 and 2010. Current global markets for this sector are valued at US$268 million and this is predicted to increase to $1.4 billion by the end of the decade. Growth is expected to be fastest in North America, increasing from an estimated $113 million today to $847 million by 2010. The new report, Infrastructure Composites Report-2001, is co-authored by Steve Loud of Composites Worldwide and Dr Howard Kliger of H.S. Kliger & Associates (Edison, NJ), and runs to 885 pages. It suggests that glass fibre will see the greatest growth, followed by carbon fibre. Unsaturated polyester, vinyl ester and epoxy resins are also forecast to be big winners. The study considers opportunities for FRP composites in the fast-growing infrastructure segments of building, civil engineering (e.g. highway bridges), ports/harbours, utilities, construction, concrete repair and

strengthening. FRP composites currently have less than 1% share of target applications but these markets are changing rapidly. Loud and Kliger believe that FRP composites, with their innovative installation methods, environmental benefits and corrosion resistance, will increasingly displace the conventional materials of steel, concrete, aluminium and wood for these applications. Increase in demand anticipated for titanium dioxide Titanium dioxide producers suffered from dramatic falls in both demand and pricing throughout 2001, and operating rates are still estimated to be as low as 70%. However, recently there have been signs of modest improvement, according to Industrial Information Resources, with price increases of US$0.03-0.05/lb in the USA. The outlook for the remainder of the year indicates that pricing for titanium dioxide pigments could continue to improve and, if utilization rates improve as well, demand in 2003 and 2004 could warrant a new round of spending to increase capacity. "As the outlook for 2003 and 2004 is now beginning to take shape, we anticipate an increase in demand will likely lead to a modest amount of new spending to be announced within the next twelve months", says Trey Hamblet, chemical group manager with Industrialinfo.com. According to Hamblet, one of North America's five producers of titanium dioxide is now revisiting plans for an additional unit that were shelved as a result of the softening markets last year. However, most capital outlay on existing plants is likely to be focused on energy reliability and efficiency improvements that yield an increase in output. Contact."
