Bronchogenic cyst masquerading as asthma An 18-month-old boy was referred for evaluation of recurrent pneumonia and wheezing. He was born at term. a product of an uneventful pregnancy and delivery; his neonatal course was uneventful. Starting at 4 months of age. he had recurrent wheezing thought to be a result of bronchial asthma. Frontal and lateral roentgenograms of the chest. taken at 17 months of age. revealed a large. homogeneous. radiopaque density in the right hilar region (Fig. I). Computed tomography of the chest with contrast medium demonstrated the density to be a subcarinal. fluid-filled cyst compressing the bronchus intermedius [arrow] (Fig. 2). The patient underwent thoracotomy and surgical removal of the mass. confirmed pathologically to be a bronchogenic cyst. Subsequently the patient has been free of any respiratory symptoms and signs. including wheezing.
