Various types of plasma instabilities in 2D electron systems are theoretically investigated from the viewpoint of the possibility of amplifying the plasma oscillations. As usual, the amplification arises when one part of a plasma medium drifts with respect to another. The following structures are considered: (1) two plasma layers separated by an insulating film; (2) plasma layer over a conducting half-space; (3) inversion layer of the MOS system in the orientation superlattice arising in vicinal planes. Under certain conditions the criteria of origin of the instabilities in the cases (1) and (2) may differ qualitatively from the 3D analogs. For example, the beam instability occurs in an interval of wave numbers k, < k
