MSN Messenger is a tool that is used to connect relatives and friends around the world and it is also haunted by multiple security threats. These security shortcomings are holding instant messaging services back from being taken seriously. The latest threat is a critical buffer overflow vulnerability. The buffer overflow hole could enable an attacker to launch an attack against the bulk of MSN Messenger users. Microsoft have responded with the release of a ‘critical patch’. With all the known vulnerabilties associated with this service, it is no wonder that some security experts advise caution during the business use of IM. In fact EDS, the computer element of the UK Government has responded to the threat by forbidding the use of Instant Messenger by its staff during work as reported by The Register The Internet Messenger websites have been blocked at the firewalls so staff can no longer download them. In contradiction to all the above scenarios, AOL are currently developing security features for its instant messaging tool with the help of VeriSign technology. This new version, Enterprise AIM, will target the enterprise, thus advocating IM technologies for business use. Digital certificates will be implemented as authentication measures for users and for the purpose of encrypting data.
