The ASCE Committees on Grouting and Soil Improvement and Geosynthetics are jointly organizing this conference. The conference will focus on recent developments in the U.S. and abroad in design and practice ofgrouting techniques, soil improvement and geosynthetics engineering. March 26-27, 1992 E u r o p e a n Civil E n g i n e e r i n g Luxembourg, Belgium After 1992 The aim of this conferenceis to provide a forum to debate the many important issues that will affect the establishment of means of cooperation with the European civil engineering industry to ensure the success of the Single European Market. The White Paper on the completion of the Single Market, published in June 1985, identified the construction industry as a priority sector for harmonisation among the European community. Now is the time for the construction industry to look forward into the next century in order to assess its polace, contribution and requirements within the framework of the Community. Educators, leaders of industry, representatives of regional and member state governments, and politicians are being invited to participate in this unique event. The seven sessions of the conference will address issues relevant to the following sectors: Education and Training; Transport; Environment; Forms of Contract, Liability and I ns ur a nc e ; Technical Harmonisation; European Teamwork; and The Way Forward. Short presentations will be made by prominent speakers representing industry and government, and ample time has been set aside for debate by participants. The conference sessions will be simultaneously translated into English, French, German and Spanish. This course will cover the fundamental elements of design of small and medium embankment dams constructed of earth, rockfill or mine waste for such purposes as impoundment oft~illn gs, municipal water supplyreservoirs, recreational lake developments, flood and debris control reservoirs, and coolingwater reservoirs for power plants. It is also applicable to the evaluation of safety of existing dams. The instruction covers aspects of wave protection, design, and construction control ofembankments for strength and stability, foundation design, seepage control and relief drainage, and slope stability by computer methods. Emphasis will be on practical aspects, and the workshop will include slope stability analysis by hand and by computer methods. These problems are common to embankment dams of earth or rock impounding water and to dam8 constructed of mine wastes. The workshop will stress solution of problems from actual designs. No attempt will be made to cover hydrologic and hydraulic design of the reservoir and spillway. The IBM PC microcomputer and compatible compact computers will be used to solve slope stability problems for the design of embankment slopes.
