INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION ON WATER POLLUTION RESEARCH (I.A.W.P.R.) WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT INSTRUMENTATION, CONTROL, AND AUTOMATION FOR WASTEWATER TREATMENT SYSTEMS LONDON, 17-21 SEPTEMBER 1973 INVITATION Trm FroST I.A.W.P.R. workshop was conducted in Vienna during the Fall of 1971 with the topic being "Design-Operation Interactions for Large Wastewater Treatment Plants". The workshop was highly successful as evidenced by the participation of approximately 140 people from 26 countries. A specialized conference was held in London in April 1972 on Phosphorus in the Environment; another in Nashville on Physical Chemical Treatment Processes and a third in Atlanta in October 1972 on Unified Concepts in Biological Treatment. The proceedings of these conferences are now being published. Instrumentation, control, and automation were among the topics covered at the first workshop in Vienna and the lively discussion which developed clearly indicated that these topics were of such widespread and current interest that a subsequent workshop should be devoted exclusively to them. The I.A.W.P.R. has therefore scheduled a workshop on Instrumentation, Control, and Automation for Wastewater Treatment Systems to be held in London on 17-20 September 1973. Arrangements are also being made for a visit to a highly automated plant in Paris on 21 September. Because of the current worldwide interest in water pollution control, there are many plants currently in the planning or design phase which could benefit from the knowledge exchanged at the workshop. There are also many existing plants where performance could be substantially improved by the incorporation of new instrumentation and control systems. It is, therefore, appropriate that a workshop be conducted to provide an opportunity for the exchange of experiences and ideas on an international basis. Questions which need to be discussed include: What measurements need to be made for plant control ? What instruments are available for making these measurements? What control systems are available for different wastewater treatment processes? What are the economics of automation ? How are wastewater treatment plants designed for automation? How can computer control systems be utilized in plant operations and in plant management? What problems are encountered in adapting a plant to computer control ? These, and related questions, will be addressed at the workshop. In order to insure presentation of all viewpoints, participants will be invited from operating engineers and managers of large treatment plants, consulting engineering firms, equipment manufacturers, government regulatory agencies, and universities. The number of participants and length of papers will be limited to insure extensive 1095

and lively discussions. In order to focus on the problems currently existing, the preliminary program (attached) has been outlined in a question format. Participants are asked to contribute from their experience and ideas to as many questions as possible. Whenever possible, contributions should be based on practical experience or observations. Performance, economics, and reliability should be stressed. Mathematical or theoretical derivations should be minimized. The official workshop language will be English. Contributions will be printed in advance and handed out to all participants at the start of the workshop. The registration fee will be 125 dollars (U.S.) and will include copies of the printed contributions, social events, and some tours. Travel and other expenses cannot be paid by I.A.W.P.R. ; however, arrangements are being made to obtain group rates for air travel and hotel accommodations. It is anticipated that the group would leave New York for London on Friday evening, 14 September, travel to Paris during the afternoon of 20 September, and leave Paris for New York on Sunday afternoon, 23 September. We would very much like for you to participate in the workshop. A form is enclosed for your convenience in indicating those topics on which you would like to make a contribution and your interest in participating in the group travel plans. I would appreciate your returning this form to one of us by 31st July, 1973. CARMEN F. GUAmNO R. A. R. DRAKE U.S.A. Organizing Committee
