o5~12~ ) 793171 ANALYSIS OF CONSOLIDATION OF EARTH AND ROCKFILL DAMS Chang, C S Ph D thesis, California Univ, Berkeley, 1976, 2~3P Presents a finite element program which was devel.~ped to aralyse the changes in stress and the movements which occur in zoned dams during consolidation of the core and the eatabliahment of stea~ly seepage conditions. The Cam Clay elastic-plastic stress-strain relationship was extemded to model more accurately the behaviour of compacted clay soils. The theore~[csl treatment also dealt with permeability and degree of saturation. The program was tested on a new pr oJect. Avail: University Microf~Ima Lid, 18 Bedford Row, Lordon, WCIR ~FA7, UK

793175 PULEOUT RESISTAI~C~ OF ROUGH RIGID PILES IN GRANULAR SOIL. TECHNICAL Das, B M; Seeley, G R; Pfeifle, T W Soils FOund, VI7, N3, Sept 1977, P72-77 Laboratory pullout tests on model piles in dry sand are reported. For shc~t piles, average uplift skin friction increases linearly with embedment ratio. 793176 S ~ q ~ J ~ N T OF AN EXCAVATED STRUCTt~ (IN FRENCH) Morbois, A Bull Liaison Lab Ponts Chaussees, N97, SeptOCt 1978, P133-138 Relates to a French project which required the excavation of part of an exiatir~ embankment to allow the passage of a main road diversion. A method of calcttlatlng settlement in the case of a very wide four~atlon reatimg on alluvial ground of limited thickness is presented. Calculated values are compared with measured values.

The solution is derived by uncoupling the load transfer for the pile into separate shaft and base components. The solution give~ the load-settlement ratio of the pile in terms of pile geometry and stiffness and soil stiffness. The solution is used to back-amalyse pile tests, enabling the soil stiffness profile to be eatlr~ted from loadsettlement measurements. Design cm-ves are given far piles of different gecmetz-ies in two typical soft clays.
