794099 GEOTECHNICAL ASPECTS OF TUNNELING IN S O ~ CLAY Brahma, C S Proc International Symposium on Geotechnical Aspects of Soft Clays, Bar~ok, 5-6 July 1977, P571-586. Pt~l Bamgkok: Asian Institute of Technology, 1977 Reviews tunnelling difficulties in soft clay, particularly problems of stability and grour~ stud face corfarol, tunnel support, groumdwater effects, and subsidence. Parameters influencing ground behaviour are also considered, including shear strength, compressibility and permeability. 7 ~ i00 USE OF A FRECAST SEGME~A'~D CONCRETE LINING FOR A TUNNEL IN SO~T CLAY Morton, J D; Dunbar, D D; Palmer, J H L Proc International Symposium on Geotechnlcal Aspects of Soft Clays, Bangkok, 5-6 July 1977, P587-598. Publ Bangkok: Asian Institlxte of~Technology, 1977 A tunnelling procedure using a full-face tunnel boring machine toget2~r with a precast segmented concrete tunnel lining has been developed in Canada amd ~ s been used successfully at T h u n d ~ Bay, Ontario, for a 2.16 m diameter tunnel in soft to firm clay at a depth of l0 to 12 m. The tunnelling machine, lining segments a~d the procedure of erection and grouting of the lining is de~:ribed, together with an irdication of progress rates amd performance.

P o w e r plants 794~Ol INTAKE AND PENSTOCK DESIGN AT AGUA V~RMELHA Beaker, M Int Water Power Dam Constr, V~0, NI0, Oct 1978, P~6-50 Describes the structural behaviour of the intake section, penstock and powerhouse, the latter being used to support the intake blocks against sliding. Also gives details of foundation stresses. The Ag~a Vermelha is to be constructed on the Rio Gramde in Brazil. 794102 ~PIRICAL PROPOSAL ON STABILITY OF ROCK C A V ~ N WALL DURING CONSTRUCTION IN JAPAN FuJita, ~S Ueda, K; Shimomura, Y Proc ist International Symposium on Storage in Excavated Rock Caverns (Rockstore 77), S~ockhOlm, 5-8 Sept 1977, V2, P309-314. Publ Oxford: Pergamon Press, 1978 Based on experience from the excavations for undergrour~ power stations, four conditions are proposed for side wall stability, together with a method for predicting side wall fa~l~re during c o n s t ~ t i o n work. 794103 PLANNING OF A C Q ~ E S S ~ - A I R ~STORAGE AT VIANDEN/LUXEMBO~RG Wittke, W; Pierau, B; Schetelig, K Proc ist International Symposium on Storage in Excavated Rock Caverns (Rockst~e 77), Stockholm, 5-8 sept 1977, V2, P367-376. In-situ stresses and stress around underground openings 794106 R H I N E G ~ N AND THE ALPINE SYSTEM lllies, J H; G~eiDar, G Geol SOC Am BIAII, V89, N~, May i~78, P~0782 The regional stress field in and around the R h i ~ a b e n r i f t system and i n t h e sd~acent parts of the Alps was investigated by a series of doc~stopper in situ stress determinations. The geological implications, age of measured regioDal stress field, a ~ c r u s t - m ~ l e ir~eractions are discussed. 794107 STRESS MECHANICS AT THE MINDOLA MINE, ZAMBIA, AFRICA Jet--c, M L CIM Bull, VTI, N799, NoV 1978, F77-83 RepOrts the investigation of patterns of virgin amd induced stress amd their effect on ground behaviour, particularly deformation of crown and rib pillars. Stops behavicm~ in the pressure zone is described aml measures taken in stops development and i n ground c o r ~ r o l by destressimg are discussed. 794108 EVALUATION OF THE DESIGN R E ~ S AND PERFORMANUE OF GATE ROADWAYS Whittaker, B N; Singh, R N Min Engr, V138, N209, Feb 1979, P535-553 Consid~s the redistribution of vertical stresses ahead of and adjacent to lomgwall extraction and the resultant closure in gate roadways. Deformation factors fc~ gate roadways are discussed amd their assessment illustrated by reference to the NOttimghamahlre coalfield. Fimdimgs from roadway deformation surveys are analysed amd correlations shown between closure and (I) seam height, (2) extraction methods, (3) arch support systems.
