BOOK REVIEWS Proceedings o f the International Symposium on Electron and Photon Interactions at High Energies Vol. lI: R e s e a r c h C o n t r i b u t i o n s (Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft e.V., H a m b u r g , 1966. VI-457 p.) T h e second v o l u m e o f these proceedings contains the texts o f the n u m e r o u s c o m m u n i c a t i o n s on recent research presented at the s y m p o s i u m , classified u n d e r seven headings. T h e printing a n d production is o f high quality - special paper being used to allow p h o t o g r a p h s to c o m e o u t with the best effect - b u t is m a r r e d by a regrettable disregard o f the r e c o m m e n d a t i o n s o f the S U N C o m m i s s i o n for the printing o f m a t h e m a t i c a l formulae a n d the use o f rational unit symbols. O. SINANOC,LU (ed.), Modern Quantum Chemistry (Istanbul lectures). Part III: Action o f light a n d Organic crystals (Academic Press, N e w Y o r k and L o n d o n 1965). xvi-323 p.) T h e present v o l u m e (part III) o f the Istanbul lectures on q u a n t u m chemistry is relevant to this j o u r n a l i n a s m u c h as it treats o f the interaction o f light with molecular structures o f varying degrees o f complexity. In spite o f the large n u m b e r of subdivisions, all assigned to different contributors, it m a n a g e s to give a coherent a c c o u n t o f the present state of the subject. T h e t r e a t m e n t is held at a high level t h r o u g h o u t ; indeed s o m e o f the material is entirely new. T h e organization o f such a course o f lectures a n d its publication in such a fine f o r m is an o u t s t a n d i n g achievement, for which n o t only the specialists, b u t also scientists with wider interests, should be grateful to the editor a n d the publishers. J. H. HAMILTON (ed.), Internal Conversion Processes (Academic Press, N e w York, 1966. vi-669 p. $22.50) T h i s v o l u m e contains a very complete report - including discussions a n d conclusions - o f a conference o f experts on a clear-cut topic o f nuclear physics (whose practical i m p o r t a n c e needs no emphasis). It is accordingly a m o s t useful a n d serviceable publication; in the latter respect, its practical value is still e n h a n c e d by appendices containing numerical tables a n d graphs. F o r non-specialists, the four general reports occupying 73 pages give an excellent survey o f the subject. L.R.

P. URBAN (ed.), Proceedings o f the IV. Internationale Universitiitswochen fiir Kernphysik 1965 der Karl-Franzens-Universitiit Graz (Springer-Verlag, Wien, 1965. 1-245 p. $ 19) This collection of articles reproducing lectures given at an international gathering in A u s t r i a is o f quite exceptional quality a n d interest. T h e lectures are a m o n g the m o s t eminent specialists in the q u a n t u m theory o f fields a n d their lectures are authoritative surveys o f various aspects o f this theory, treated with all the depth a n d originality one expects o f them. T h e high s t a n d a r d of this meeting does h o n o u r to its enterprising organizer, Professor P. U r b a n of Graz University. L.R. 695
